In the peaceful cathedral town of Lafferton, a gunman is terrorising young women. What - if anything - links the attacks? Is the marksman with a rifle the same person as the killer with a handgun or do the police have two snipers on their hands?
Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Serrailler is in charge of the case, but he is also struggling to deal with a tragedy at the heart of his own family. Two forthcoming events - a local fair and the high-profile cathedral wedding of the Lord Lieutenant's daughter - only add to the pressure ...

I've just finished this, the latest in the Simon Serrailler series, and I think its the best yet. Would love to share it with others so I'm hoping to send it out as a book ring if I get enough interest.

I think I agree with Tanamo that this is the best yet in this series. I did have an inkling who the shooter might be - unusual for me! As usual, I loved the way all the different strands were maintained in parallel and then came together, although the Tom storyline just didn't seem to quite have the same significance to the main story as the others and I felt its ending was a little unsatisfactory.
Ready to pass this on to AliceF as soon as I have an address.

Thanks! Looking forward to this one...
Incredibly well-written... I've never read anything by this author before, but I will definitely track down the beginning of the series now; or - at least - when I'm feeling a bit more resilient! There was one slight problem, you see: I got to know the characters so deeply (even one who I'd only met for three or four pages) that when a severely emotional crisis cropped up, I felt unable to give the rest of the book my full attention and had to skim the rest.
The story was interesting, the people were believable and I didn't guess whodunnit. Thanks very much, Tanamo!

Famulus (London) asked to be skipped; now awaiting an address from Hutchha (USA).

Thank you for introducing me to Susan Hill! There were too many plots colliding at one time for me so it is not a favorite. I expect other of her books will be more to my taste.
