Penguin Books Paperback 1976
301 pages
Product Description
This book is soaked in the sunshine of Corfu where the author lived as a boy with his 'Family and other Animals.' It is a matter of personal taste whether one most enjoys the family, with its many eccentric hangers-on, or the animals Gerry studies and brings back to the strawberry pink, the daffodil-yellow, or the snow-white villa. The procession includes toads, and tortoises, bats and butterflies scorpions and geckos, ladybirds, glow-worms, octopuses and rose-beetles, Quasimodo the pigeon, the puppies Widdle and Puke, and of course the magpies.

What did we read before Herriot?
Before Herriot??
Easy - Durrell, Gerald Durrell.
Durrell's sunny childhood spent in Corfu prior the war. So positive, so idyllic and what a zany family!! This book is a classic which should be in every household.
Looking forward to re-reading this once again.

Hippolein, I know yo'u will find this hard to believe, but yet another of the books you bought me earlier this week is heading to a new home without me reading it first. It is MiuM's birthday on the 19th and she has put this on her wishlist on the 13th, a day AFTER I got it, so this is not intentional. And I have read these books previously, many times, so I'm not letting the book down, either. I'm sure it will have a very good home at MiuM's.
MiuM, I know you'll fall in love with the Durrell's, everybody does. Happy Birthday!

I tagged glade1 from USA with this book on the wishlist tag game, so I'm sending the book to that bookcrosser after finishing it. I just started reading the book.
Fortunately this is a small and lightweighted book. (=`ω´=)

interesting account of the Durrel family's life in Corfu. Very accepting mom indeed and quite a lovely place. All family members were different personalities, as they usually are..

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
I'm sending this book to Glade1 next week. Happy reading and greetings from a faraway place called Turku, Finland!
Received in the mail yesterday. Thank you, Mium, for the kind Wish List Tag and for the other goodies as well - I'll have to try out Google translator to figure out what it all says; I don't know a single word of Finnish :)
I'm not sure when I'll get this book read, as I keep tagging people with other TBRs, but it is safe on my shelf until that time.
Thanks again!

I'm sorry it took me so long to get around to reading this book, because what a delight it is! Geral Durrell had a wonderful life on Corfu and tells it beautifully. His family is quirky but loving and his mother is very accepting of all her children's various interests and personalities. I wish I could go live in that time and place for a while!
There is one sentence that caused me to cringe, when Durrell mentions a stupid looking fish having a "Negroid" appearance. I wonder if more recent versions of the book have this edited out. The version I read is falling apart and quite old.
I hope this will hold on for another reading or two. Will mark it as available for now.
ETA 11-14-22: Going to iwillrejoice as an RABCK.
