Set in a den of thieves in Victorian England, this novel focuses on Susan, a pickpocket, who is persuaded by a seedy con-artist, Gentleman Richard Rivers, to pose as a lady's maid and infiltrate the household of Maud, a young heiress in possession of a large inheritance.
Narrated in three parts by Susan and Maud, the story becomes a little repetitious; however, I enjoyed seeing the same events through different eyes. The plot twists, combined with elements of conspiracy, eroticism, deceit, mystery and tragedy combine to make a good read.
Winner of the British Book Award (Author of the Year, 2003)
Winner of the Crime Writers Association Award (Ellis Peters Historical Dagger, 2002)

A book from her wishlist sent to booklady331 in Florida via media mail. Enjoy!
Thank you for your generous gift of this book. It arrived yesterday late afternoon. I plan to send it to another BCer when I finish. Again, thank you!!
This is a well written book and for the most part I enjoyed it. Like pinklady60, I enjoyed seeing the same events through different eyes. That being said, I felt that the use of the "f" word and sex scenes detracted from the writing.
I will probably release for the One Word Title release challenge in August.
