"The guesrs at the Haworth Hotel rose late and feeling fragile after the revels of New Year's Eve. But the guest in Annexe 3 didn't emerge in time for the treasure hunt, the cream tea or the evening pantomime planned for new Year's Day. He was still in his room lying dead on the bloodsoaked bed.
Inspector Morse's inquiries suggested that many guests had payed more attention to their exotic fancy dress than to any sexual fidelities. Was 'Mrs Palmer' perhaps a little too attractive to remain a dutiful wife much longer? Were 'Mr and Mrs Smith' yet another unwed couple who had settled for such anonymity? And who were 'Mr and Mrs Ballard' who figured so enigmatically in the tragic events which were to affect the Haworth Hotel that New Year's Day?
And how, Morse pondered, had the hotel's booking confirmation been delivered by the Royal Mail to an address that didn't exist..."
