Hempel's now-classic collection of short fiction is peopled by complex characters who have discovered that their safety nets are not dependable and who must now learn to balance on the threads of wit, irony, and spirit.

A curious addition to the 1001 books. Some strange stories and strange characters that have a remarkable realistic feel.

While I liked this book, it wasn't fabulous for me. I love short stories. These were more like eavesdropping on people's conversations. Some longer than others. I was curious for more. Some of the stories were very good. Others just a bit weird. All in all not too bad, I just wasn't wowed.

This is now available to other 1001-library members

It's here! Thanks so much! Amy Hempel has been on my radar for years. She was recommended to me because I also enjoy Aimee Bender. So pleased to finally have the opportunity to read this.

WOW. I read this about two years ago, and I could have sworn I remembered journaling it, but I see I did not. My bad.

This goes in the "liked it, didn't love it" category for me. I love short stories and this was a quick read, but there was nothing here that I found particularly powerful or memorable.
