I'm fairly certain that many are familiar with this classic novel by Kurt Vonnegut. The thrilling apocalyptic tale of an infrangible molecule; an intriguing critique on science, technology and manipulation of nature--as applicable today as it was when it was first published in 1963. Social commentary with a Vonnegut flair!

This book is on track to travel the States. Obviously, you are either currently in possession of the book, en queue to receive it in the future at some point, or somehow you simply found this journal and decided to read it just for the hell of it. Either way, I hope you all enjoy it and keep in touch through the journal. After all, "People have to talk about something just to keep their voice boxes in working order, so they'll have good voice boxes in case there's ever anything really meaningful to say," -Kurt Vonnegut, Cat's Cradle.

"Cat's Cradle" was forwarded on to kestralwing in Washington on Wednesday, June 18, 2003.

And so the book begins its tour of the United States. I can't help but be a little jealous of it. Next stop: Bellingham, Washington. Good luck little book!

Got this book in the mail today, a small pink time machine. It's been 40 years since I read this; I'm planning to read it again over the 4th of July (bang!) and will edit this entry before sending the book on its way.

Thanks, iansmack!

Loved this book when I first read it (mumble mumble) years ago. Picked it up, read for a few pages, and decided to leave it in the past. Not that I didn't like it now, exactly, just that it belongs to a different time and place.

Sending it on to the next BookCrosser.

Journal Entry 5 by Seferim from Columbia, Maryland USA on Monday, September 15, 2003
I received this one from "YES", however, it appears that they did not ever journal it. I will be able to start the book soon (I have another 2 bookrings I am working on) but I am a fast reader and will pass it on soon.

This one really came at a bad time for me... I have way too many books here, and way too little time. Sorry I am not able to add my comments. I hope to read this one in the future. Mailing on to next bookcrosser.

I could've guessed that this book was written in the 60s without even looking at the copyright date. Bizarre. I mean the book is bizarre. I don't understand the fascination with Kurt Vonnegut at all. I remember a teacher in grade school talking about him and what a great writer he was, but I just don't see it. Maybe I'm part of the wrong generation for this book? Whatever. It was sort of interesting to see where he went with the story but I felt like he was on a drug trip when he wrote it.

Earlier this week I mailed the book to JPandJo. She should have it shortly.

I read this once before in High School but I feel I got more from the story now that I am older.

It's interesting that Vonnegut wrote Chapter 44(Communist Sympathizers) in 1963 and those feelings are still around today. This is where the ambassador tells us why he lost one of his jobs.

Just starting this today. Sorry, for the delay. I was swamped with Bookrings in December and January. Almost caught-up. I will read quickly.

Journal Entry 15 by BooksnBeer from Pasadena, Florida USA on Tuesday, March 23, 2004
Finished reading this last night. Wow – what a wild ride! I totally enjoyed this. Vonnegut has a comment/opinion on every aspect of society. Just when I thought – oh the book is making a point on one subject, a multitude of other subjects and points are mentioned. I loved the main character and felt like “that is me”. It does not seem like this was written in the 60’s. The analogies can be related directly to 2004. Religion, science, war universal conflicts of our world.

I will be looking for another Vonnegut bookring!!

This is on to grover3d today. Scramble asked to be skipped. Enjoy.

It's here - thanks so much!

Journal Entry 18 by grover3d on Wednesday, April 7, 2004
Great book - read it in one sitting! Vonnegut does a great job of adequately outlining a large number of characters, and I agree with BooksnBeer (and not just because I was REALLY looking for an excuse to include BooksnBeer's name! =))- I would NOT have guessed the book was written in the sixties. I don't recall anything that dated it and the extinction of the human race is such a timely topic! The book is witty and profound, and in my experience most authors have trouble reconciling those two things.

Thank you so much for sharing it - I'm really glad to have read it!
