Long before Douglas Adams, Sheckley invented a character called Marvin. Life changes for him when he reads a small ad where 'a gentleman from Mars' asks if any Earth gentleman would be prepared to swap bodies with him.... and the Mindswap begins from there. For invention, comic ideas and characters' turns of phrase, this is up there with anything more recent.
