This book took me quite some time to finish, six weeks to be exact. I just couldn't read too much at a time. I found the style very demanding. The story on the other hand was compelling. So I would give two ratings, 8 stars for the story and 4 stars for the style. Which makes a 6 star average.

Had this one on my wishlist. Thank you so much!

I found it hard to get into in the beginning, mainly because of the flowery language and excessive descriptiveness. Also, the many introductions to different characters right at the start left me somewhat confused over who was who, but the book having been so highly recommended I decided to keep reading. I really got into it about halfway through and even began enjoying Roy's poetic sentences and the emotive way she describes Estha and Rahel's thoughts. Even though the way the novel is written allows you to guess what and how the something bad happened, I liked how the story moved back and forth in time, giving glimpses of how the events unfolded and how the significance of each event shaped everyone's lives.
