A fascinating book about two people suffering from Multiple Personality Disorder (Now known as Dissociative Identity Disorder). Who are they? Will they manage to get their lives in order?

Thriller, mystery and crime novel all rolled into one. Compelling.

Received it in the mail today. Will get to it as soon as I finish the one I am reading now. Thanx a bunch for organizing this ray/ring!

Wow - I really enjoyed this one. There were a couple of spots where I was ready for the story to advance faster than the author allowed. I managed to endure... I loved how the author kept the mundane from seeming so mundane. I think even non-MPD folks can relate to the internal arguments and differences - for them it is usually called a conscious.

Journal Entry 7 by nillabreen from Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts USA on Sunday, November 22, 2009
Penny and Andrew both suffered horrific abuse as children -- horrific and disordered. Penny's mother's attacks were characterized by randomness -- cat and mouse games, instant reversals of mood. Even so, she's always trying to discover the rules:

Instead of stepping aside, Mouse's mother continued to stand in the doorway. This was another game: to get out of the room, Mouse had to flatten herself against the doorframe and edge past her mother's broad hips, quietly accepting any pinches or slaps her mother chose to inflict as she did so. This time, rather than lay a hand on her, Mouse's mother simply waited until she was halfway through the door and then leaned sideways, crushing Mouse into the doorframe with her full weight. Mouse gritted her teeth, knowing that to cry out was a violation of the rules. pp.146-7

Andrew was brutally abused by his stepfather. But later in the book, Andrew points out that the stepfather was predictable -- a wild animal will attack you, which is horrible, but what else do you expect it to do? It isn't until toward the end of the book that Andrew learns [~spoiler~] more about his mother -- that she was kind to him when the stepfather wasn't around, and also that she knew everything that was going on, undeniably. She turned away, and this is what could not be ordered. [~end spoiler~] This is what fractured Andrew's soul.

Penny and Andrew splintered not just because of horrific abuse, but because of not being able to map the actions of the people around them onto any cohesive understanding of the world. Language and consciousness are interrelated, and as Wittgenstein says, language is like a game. So what happens to consciousness if you can't form any workable hypothesis about the rules of the game? Andrew and Penny developed separate consciousnesses that could work within a subset of the game. And within this framework, the reader can imagine why Penny would keep calling that hotel in Spokane, and can understand that Andrew's case is worse than Penny's.

It is a common experience to have some event or circumstance that one would rather not acknowledge. For us singletons it is on a scale of preference, not metaphysical impossibility. The experiences that we prefer not to acknowledge are probably the ones that would cause the most difficulty for our ordered understanding of the world. Too much adherence to one preferred ordering without stopping to look at the facts and reevaluate our hypotheses leads to another type of problem. Chief Bradley's actions were in part inspired by a belief in the way things ought to be. That Althea's second husband should be a good man, better for her than Silas Gage, was necessary for Chief Bradley's internal order. Clinging to this order and refusing to reevaluate it is probably what lead to [~spoiler~]his not understanding what Andrea was saying when she asked him for help, and finally lead to his murder of Horace Rollins.[~end spoiler~]

Our malleable selves are shaped by what we own and what we do not. This noticing, evaluating, and integrating is a basic function of personality. It goes on constantly as we maintain our busy lives, and most of the time we are not aware of it. The result of Penny and Andrew's original effort at making sense of the world turned out to be not so workable when they had to exist in society as independent persons. Analogous suboptimal results often occur in single personalities. We are shaped by the way we integrated events and circumstances in the past, and maybe those events and circumstances could have been integrated differently, leading to a slightly different shape of personality, which takes life in a slightly different direction. Maybe we'd all be better off if we took the time to think about how our experiences are integrated, how our choice about the interpretation of events shapes us and the general direction of our lives.

Apart from lending itself to lengthy philosophical musing, Set This House in Order is an excellent story that moves right along and keeps the reader turning pages. Thanks for sharing it.

I have the address of the next participant in the ray. I'll get it in the mail within the next few days.

Found this book fascinating, and very well done with the different voices and characters. Turned into a page turning thriller at the end. Very enjoyable and I didn't see the twist in the middle coming.

This is one of the best books I have read in a while. This book does a wonderful and respectful job of trying to take the perspective of someone with DID. Matt Ruff did excellent research regarding the treatment and social difficulties someone with DID has (e.g., blackouts).
In addition to being a wonderful book about DID, this book was also a compelling mystery, using the fragmented pieces of DID as foundation. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Dissociative Disorders.
