I like Ann Rule's big true crime studies. This one was no exception. It kept me riveted.

The criminal here, Brad Cunningham, was truly a piece of work. He was one of those people who had an overinflated ego and could turn on the charm when necessary, especially when it came to women. I always ask myself when I read stuff like this how women can fall for people like this guy, but now I can see why. Anyway, his ex-wife, Cheryl, was waiting for her children to be returned to her when she got a call from him to meet her on the Sunset Highway in Oregon (hence the title). She couldn't refuse, not when it came to her children, so she went. Before she left, she called her mother & told her what was going on, and that she was afraid for her life. She also left a note for her brother, living with her, to come and find her immediately after he got the note. She never came back -- instead, a passerby found her body in her van, in the middle of the highway.

When the police went to question Brad Cunningham, the first thing he asked was "was she in a car accident" ... even before they told him how she died. Based on their own suspicions, and those of Cheryl's family, the police made up their minds that he was guilty. But there was no physical evidence tying him to the crime, and he had an alibi (of sorts). The rest of the book, done in typical Ann Rule fashion, examines Brad's background, Cheryl's, and everyone who came into contact with Brad who was relevant to the case. It takes the reader up to the trial & its result.

I am absolutely undeniably fascinated with why people do what they do; with their motivations, their history & whether or not the way a person turns out is due to nature or nurture. This book does not disappoint. That's why I like Ann Rule so much...she puts so much time & energy into her books and does painstaking research.

Highly recommended for true-crime aficionados such as myself.
