Perhaps it's because I read a few other books while reading this, but I felt that this one, despite the unusual heroine and unusual setting, never really got off the ground. It's never really clear what sets Eli apart from other macho men Ray may have encountered (other than not being fat and ugly, and being able to hold his own in a fight - although perhaps that is it?). I did enjoy the unexpectedness of the grandparents. Jeremy's about-face remains a total mystery to me.
