This novel has been hanging around in my piles of books to be read for so long that I can no longer remember where or when I bought it, nor why except that I think it had been recommended to me....

The back cover describes it as: "A richly textured story of love, loss and the distance between three generations of one family."

Review, 13.9.09: I enjoyed meeting and spending time with Iris, her grand-daughter Ruby, and Lesley, their daughter/mother, in this novel which mostly takes place in Cairo, alternating between the early 1940s and the present. It's a compelling tale of love, loss and devotion.

I plan to leave it in our holiday cottage for the entertainment of future visitors.
