Journal Entry 1 by Annadlx from Wiesbaden, Hessen Germany on Wednesday, August 19, 2009
The quirky world of Stars Hollow and the incredible relationship of the Gilmore Girls--mother Lorelai and daughter Rory are best friends--continues to engage viewers after seven seasons, with its lightning-fast dialogue, dry wit, and unusual take on family relations. In this satirical yet sensitive collection of essays, leading writers weigh in on how this unique show has successfully broken the teenage-sitcom mold and gained viewers of all ages. Addressing questions such as "What are the risks of having your mother be your best friend?" "How is "Gilmore Girls" anti-family, at least in the traditional sense?" and "What's a male viewer to do when he finds both mother and daughter attractive?" this anthology also looks at how the characters are shaped by the pop culture they consume and how prevalent a feeling of class consciousness is within the series.

Journal Entry 3 by Annadlx from Wiesbaden, Hessen Germany on Sunday, August 23, 2009
It's probably my own fault that I didn't enjoy this book too much. I had such high expectations for it and waited years for it's former ring to start and get to me. I finally decided to buy my own copy but well it wasn't really worth all the wait and the trouble.
Some essays are nice to read because it helps revisiting Stars Hallow and some have nice reviews of Gilmore Girl's characters but I guess it's missing the kick for me.
The best esayy for me was the one about Star's Hollows businesses.

I'm looking forward to read what everybody else thinks about this collection of essays.
I hope you'll enjoy the book more than I did.

The format of this book is also somewhat difficult to read while hanging out in the sun...

Please enjoy this ring!

I don't know what I expected, but this book is boring for me. I just can't finish it.
I love the Gilmore Girls and I was looking forward to reading this book. However, it wasn't fun for me to read. I've read 2 or 3 stories and since then I always preferred other books to this one. That's why I finally decided to abandon it. But it was nice to "come" to Stars Hollow again. I guess I'll have to search my home for the DVDs now ;-)

I know what I expected : a book just in the same style as the series and I was astonished to find a wannabe-analyzis about the protagonists and their environment. I misses sarcastic phrases and was looking for any humorous words, but can´t find it.
It´s a pity, this book missed the chance for big entertainment and I will handle it like Jessi626 : put it away and look for the DVD´s

I also could not finish this book...
I expected something else and I am disappointed. I really love the Gilmore Girls and I like the quotations in this book, but I think the stories in "Coffee at Luke's" don't have the same atmosphere like the TV series.

Dundee1204 doesn't have time at the moment, so I'll send the book to Annieselan tomorrow.

The book arrived today and I´m looking forward to read it.

Journal Entry 14 by Annieselan from Fulda, Hessen Germany on Thursday, November 19, 2009
The book was not so bad as I feared, reading all the other JE. I enjoyed reading it, though of course it hasn´t the same atmosphere as the series itself. It was written by fans for fans and so some stories are better than the others. I really liked the story about Rory and her three "dads" and it was interesting to read about the connection between GG and food. Three of the stories were more or less crap for me: Heather Swains "Whimsy goes with everything" about her adored Kirk (I really don´t like Kirk, no way) and Stephanie Whiteside´s "`When Paris met Rory" which started good but then she drew the conclusion that Paris is the ideal soulmate for Rory in EVERY way - urrghs- and Jill Winters` "Happiness under Glass" the so called truth about Lorelai and her life in Stars Hollow, which only annoyed me.
Really funny was Chris McCubbins` "Golden Age Gilmore Girls" transferring the Series to a classic Movie from 1952.

Thank you for letting me join this ring, Annadlx! After reading the book I now have the strong desire to see all volumes of the TV series again.... ;-)

Unlike, it seems, nearly everyone else, I liked this book! I don't know what the previous journalers were expecting, but I got exactly what I was waiting for: easy-to-read, light-hearted and entertaining essays dealing with one of my favourite tv shows. Admittedly not all of them were particularly insightful, but then that's always the case with collections like these. Most enjoyable to me were "In Defence of Emily Gilmore", "Your Guide to the Real Stars Hollow Business World", "Dining with the Gilmores" and "Reading, Rory, and Relationships". I'm now more eager than ever to get the DVD sets and watch the show all over again from beginning to end!

The book's now off to Tubereader in Luxembourg. Enjoy!

My Review: I really enjoyed this book! Gilmore Girls is one of my all-time favorite tv shows. It's smart, fun, entertaining and the characters seem real if a bit eccentric.

Here are some of my favorite lines from the show found in this book:

RORY: Hey. My mom's not wearing any underwear.
LORELAI: Oh!
RORY: Well you aren't.
TAYLOR: You're just being selfish, Luke.
LORELAI: Still they don't notice. I can't take it anymore.
TAYLOR: We're talking about the spirit of fall.
LORELAI: (gets the coffee herself and lifts the cover off the muffins) What kind of muffin do you want?
RORY: Blueberry.
LUKE: You know where you can stick the spirit of fall? (hands Lorelai a utensil to pick up the muffins) Here, don't use your hands.
TAYLOR: I don't think you're taking me seriously.
LUKE: What gave you that idea? (to Lorelai, who is leaving) No tip?
LORELAI: Oh, yeay, here's a tip...serve your customers.
LUKE: Here's another...don't sit on any cold benches.

PARIS: We're friends?
RORY: I'm not sure if there is an exact definition for what we are, but I do think it falls somewhere in the bizarro friends-ish realm. Come on stay.
PARIS: Okay. But if you're doing all this so you can freeze my bra. I'll kill you.

LORELAI: It's from my mother.
RORY: What is it?
LORELAI: It's heavy. Must be her hopes and dreams for me.
RORY: I thought she discarded those years ago.

RORY: The longer you wait the harder it's gonna be.
LORELAI: For the love of God, will you please ring the bell.
RORY: You can tell them before dinner.
LORELAI: I will tell them when I'm ready to tell them. You have to accept that because I'm the mother and you're the daughter, and in some cultures, that means you have to do what I say.
RORY: If you don't tell them in two weeks, I will.
LORELAI: Though apparently not in this one.

RORY: I don't know. I just snapped and got sick of everything. I wanted to go anywhere.
LORELAI: So you picked hell?
RORY: It was the first place that came to mind.

PARIS: We're going to reveal the seedy underbelly of small towns--starting with yours.
RORY: Stars Hollow does not have a "seedy underbelly". We don't even have a meter maid.

RORY: If the house was burning down, what would you save first, the cake or me?
LORELAI: Not fair! The cake doesn't have legs!

*I am making progress on the book, I have sent a second msg to Megi53. Please advise what I should do if she doesn't not get in contact, as I had preferred U.S./Canada shipping. Thanks!

I just saw the rule about adding a 2nd je, I hope this additional edit is acceptable. I also
really enjoyed the essay about Kirk. Sookie( & Lane) was one of my favorite characters on the show because she didn't really intentionally or unintentionally hurt anyone, as far as I can recall. I only really watched the first 5 seasons, and then it got too hokey for me. I liked the thoughts in the various essays, but overall the book wasn't what I expected. I still enjoyed reading it though so thank you for the ring. Cheers!

Journal Entry 37 by Megi53 at Danville, Virginia USA on Saturday, May 21, 2011
Came in the mail yesterday and I dove right in -- read two essays in the middle.

Sara Morrison's "Your Guide to the Real Stars Hollow Business World" was every bit as good as I'd expected -- I love Television Without Pity! "Happiness Under Glass" by Jill Winters was great -- she points out how similar Lorelai is to her mother Emily.

The envelope came with an elegant sketch of the town gazebo. I cut it out and am using it for a bookmark!

Journal Entry 38 by Megi53 at Danville, Virginia USA on Thursday, June 30, 2011
Fun book! I knew what to expect, since I'd previously read scholarly analyses of Sue Grafton's Kinsey Millhone novels and one of my other favorite TV shows, The Simpsons (argghh! tried to add links but can't seem to do it. Oh, well -- just search G is for Grafton and The D'oh! of Homer with my username).

My favorites were the more snarky, fun-filled essays, such as Sara Morrison's business analysis of Stars Hollow and Heather Swain's adoration of Kirk Gleason. Every sentence in Chris McCubbins' "Golden Age Gilmore Girls: How Classic Hollywood Comedy Defines the Show" was a joy.

"Mama Don't Preach" by Carol Cooper was too ponderous and; sadly, since it was about food, Gregory Stevenson's "Dining with the Gilmores" veered off into weirdness with its comparison of Stars Hollow to St. Paul's Philippi.

As I said in my first j/e, another bright spot was "Happiness Under Glass", wherein Jill Winters reinforced my impression that Lorelei and Rory were vain and arrogant. In fact, all the characters on the show irritated me massively, but I still can't get enough of it!

Thanks very much for the ring. I received peggypostcard's address so this will be moving on soon -- after my exam.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I skimmed Coffee at Luke's as opposed to reading it thoroughly but it is that kind of light book. At the beginning I feared the previous reviews were right and I found the first few essays tiresome. The constant reiteration of who the characters are and their relationships to one another, though making each chapter complete as an essay, was irritating for someone familiar with the tv show. However I stuck it out and found the second half of the book far more interesting than the first.

Lopeanha does not wish to participate in the bookring anymore, so the book is now on its way to kiki1928 in Germany. Happy reading!
