A first generation Chinese-American, Ruth is troubled and has a hard time working out a successful relationship. As a ghost writer, she has no problems translating other peoples' words to make them understandable and to communicate precisely what she wants to say. So why can't she do this with the important people in her life, including her mother? Her mother is a native-born Chinese woman with a secret past who has emigrated to the USA to make a better life.
Wait, isn't this what happened in "The Joy Luck Club" and again in "The Kitchen God's Wife"? Oh, yeah, it is. I thought is sounded familiar. Although I enjoyed both of Tan's earlier works, I don't think I want to reread this book for the third time, so I'm going to let this one travel. No rating as I didn't finish it, but hopefully someone who either hasn't read any of Tan's works or likes them so much they can read another of her novels will find this and be able to give it a high rating. Enjoy!
Welcome to BookCrossing!

I enjoyed reading this book as I hadn't read any other of Tan's books. Although, I didn't really like how the ending just neatly tied it up in a bow. The whole story plays out over 230 pages and then in the last 20 pages all problems and mysteries are solved or explained.
I did like the the settings of the book and the historical aspects but, after reading mammajamma's review I will opt to skip Tan's other books.
