Having read 'Half of a Yellow Sun' and rally enjoyed it, I wanted to read other books by this author. Again this book centers around the authors homeland and domestic family situation. Although the book seems to center on domestic abuse, it also focuses on influences, in the home and outside that creates? the person we become.
Picked up at the Edinburgh book festival meetup today, thanks ALerche. I've recently read Half of a Yellow Sun so am interested to see what this is like by comparison. However, the way my to-be-read pile is looking, it may take a few months I'm afraid!
Now I thought "Half of a Yellow Sun" would take some beating in the 'heart-rendering emotional turmoil stakes', but this one does it! The first person narration was very well done. It sucked me right into the story and I remained absorbed throughout. The leading character's relationship with her father was portrayed very realistically I thought, given other non-fictional accounts of domestic violence that I've read. I felt so very, very sorry for her.
The ending was okay, but not as strong as the rest of the book.

Picked up at the Meet Up last night, looking forward to reading it
Thoroughly enjoyed this book too even though ''enjoying'' is probably not the right word when it comes to the scenes of domestic abuse and the pain the children and also the mother suffer. The characters were very realistic and the language beautifully chosen. A book that will stay with me for quite some time.
