Having recently finished 'Murder Must Advertise, a 1001 book, I stumbled across this book in the Lord Peter Wimsey series. Even though it is Book 14 in the series, and I have only read one other, I am still going to give it a go.

I am all packed, and will be heading off to Thailand in a couple of days time, taking this book with me. I have joined the 15th Set It Yourself Challenge: January to March 2011 , as the timing fits perfectly with my trip.

I guess that I expected it to be one murder mystery, I was wrong. I did not realise that it is in fact a collection of short stories, ideal for dipping in and out off.

Lord Peter Wimsey Stories:
1. In the teeth of the evidence: a man is dead, and he only identifiable by his teeth.
2. Absolutely elsewhere: a man is found at his dinner table, bludgeoned to death; who could have got in and done it without being seen?

Montague Egg stories
3. A Shot at goal
4. dirt cheap: Mr Pringle is found dead in his hotel bed
5. bitter almonds: Mr Whipley is discovered dead, apparently from prussic acid poisoning, after drinking an after-dinner glass of creme de menthe.
6. false weight: Archibald Slater, a travelling lingerie salesman is murdered; he is a bigamist, but who did it.
7. The Professors manuscript: a professor, in a remote house is keen to meet people, and discuss his soon to be published manuscript. Is he all he seems?

Other stories:
8. The Milk Bottles: a short story published in the newspaper, causes concern and speculation about the milk bottles accumulating at the door of Mr and Mrs Wilbraham
9. Dilema
10. An Arrow over the house: Miss Robbins begins a creative campaign to get her manuscript noticed by a publishing firm. What will the consequences be?
11. Scrawns: Susan accepts a job at a house where the other servants are disfigured and the masters behave strangely. Is all as it appears?
12. Nebchadnezzar
13. The Inspiration of Mr Budd: a man visits Mr Budd for a hair colour change. Could he be a infamous murderer on the run?
14. Blood Sacrifice: Garrick Drury, an actor, is injured in a car crash; his only chance is a blood transfusion.
15. Suspicion
16. The Leopard Lady: Arthur Tressider has an irritating ward that he would like to be rid off. Could Smith & Smith Removals be the answer.
17. The Cyprian Cat:

It is easy to see for my descriptions (or lack of) when a story did not grab my interest much. Overall, I enjoyed the stand alone stories more than the ones with a reoccurring character. I just do not see the plausibility in a traveling salesman (Montague Egg stories) being allowed to get involved in solving murders - it was a different time though.

Good example of vintage crime; lack of violence and forensics, just reliance on people both to solve the crime, and to confess too easily.

As I am in Bangkok, there is no way that I could resist visiting the 2011 International Book Fair and leaving a trail of books behind me.
