I'm very excited about this book--Margaret Atwood is brilliant and one of the few authors (perhaps the only one) that I would run out and buy in hardcover.

Journal Entry 2 by Genevalove from Lexington, Kentucky USA on Thursday, June 12, 2003
Well, this book was worth every penny. With “Oryx and Crake,” Margaret Atwood has created a compelling dystopia that not only shows us what current trends could lead to, but also raises some incredibly thought-provoking questions about what we want the world to be, what “paradise” would really be like, and what anyone should be willing to do to create it or preserve it. As always, Margaret Atwood’s writing is engaging and vivid–-I will be thinking about this book for a long time. I can’t say too much more without spoiling the plot, but I highly recommend this one.

I just finished reading. I have not read Atwood before. I like the book. I also found it confusing at times. I will be passing this on to caligula03 on Sunday. We live within 10 miles of each other.

Thanks for doing the bookray. I will read other Atwood later.

Journal Entry 6 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Sunday, July 27, 2003
Received this today in a personal hand off at the Serremonte Mall. I will get to it as soon as I can.

Journal Entry 7 by caligula03 from Hayward, California USA on Saturday, August 9, 2003
I'm 1/3 of the way through it. If I didn't want to sleep tonight I would probably finish the book in one sitting. It's quite a page turner! Snowman reminds me of Romulus from The Caveman's Valentine. In fact the entire narrational tone of Oryx and Crake reminds me of The Caveman's Valentine even though their narratives are quite different.

Released on Saturday, August 16, 2003 at mailed to bookcrosser in Charleston, West Virginia USA.

I am mailing this book along with the Longest Single Note to Grover3D as she is the next in both lists.

Received this today.....genevalove, I can't thank you enough for sharing this with us. Atwood is one of my all-time favorite writers, and I was planning to buy this in HC, but now I can hold off for a personal copy once it comes out in PB, and still enjoy it now (and use that "saved" money to buy more books, naturally). It's next on the TBR pile.

Journal Entry 10 by grover3d on Sunday, November 2, 2003
Atwood is one of my all-time favorite writers (did I say that already?) and she doesn't disappoint here. This is nearly a jaunty look at the future when compared with her classic THE HANDMAID'S TALE, but plenty dark too. I loved the deliciously ambiguous ending - simply perfect! Thanks for sharing this....

The book arrived today! My first ever Book Ring "catch". Thank you Erin and Genevalove.

I will take a break from HEGEMONY OR SURVIVAL and start on this one right away. Comments to follow...

November 25th. A compelling read. The comparison to THE CAVEMAN'S VALENTINE is certainly apt.

Atwood makes some telling points about the business of genetic engineering... the most salient point being that it is much more a business than it is a science. I think she portrays the slicers and splicers as being more in control of the process than they are in fact. And I think she is perhaps too optomistic -- if (when?) a transgenic killer is let loose in the world it won't because some misguided genius elevates himself to the status of god, it will be because some CEO is too busy bribing a politician to think about the consequences of turning his company's latest (untried, untested, but oh so profitable) alien lifeform loose in the environment).

An entertaining and thought-provoking read.

This will go into the mail to Wandeca this afternoon.

Just got this book along with two children books, thank you ecoboy...I'll be reading the books to my children this afternoon at story time. I'll be reading "Oryx and Crake" in the next week or so...
Thank you Genevalove for sharing!

I'm fairly new Atwood reader, I've only read THE BLIND ASSASSIN, which I consider one of my favourite books. I really enjoyed "Oryx and Crake", I was hooked right from the beginning. Thanks so much for sharing, Genevalove!

Just received it, thanks! Will read it as quickly as possible.

Journal Entry 15 by Too-Ticki from Uppsala, Uppland Sweden on Saturday, January 17, 2004
Fascinating, thought-provoking, scary and funny (crawling algae-based towels and the perfume Crack Cocaine - like something from The Hitch Hiker's Guide...). Made me both laugh out loud, gasp and look away. Dystopias definitely still have a role to play in literature and society. Thanks!

Sending along today - happy travelling!

It's with me now. I've just finished Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and loved it. I can't wait to read this one. Thanks for sharing!

[may/11 update: I've just finished The Virgin Suicides and will start reading this today. Sorry everybody for the delay]

Oh my, I can't believe I've kept this book for so long!

I've just bought my own copy of Oryx and Crake so that I can mail this one to Australia and get the ring moving again.

Thanks for sharing :)

Journal Entry 20 by emmafiles from Murrumba Downs, Queensland Australia on Monday, September 6, 2004
Received today - two books ahead of it and then on the way to China!

Update: October
I tried really hard to get into this, and parts of it I found very interesting (like the comments on leisure time in the future). However, I haven't had much luck with Atwood at all lately - this is the third of hers I have tried in as many months and I just can't get past chapter 4.
I sent the book to rhythmbiscuit last week.

Journal Entry 21 by rhythmbiscuit from Northglenn, Colorado USA on Saturday, January 29, 2005
This book has finally arrived from Australia. I am glad, since I had begun to fear it was lost somewhere in the Pacific Ocean.

However, I don't forsee being able to read it anytime soon. So I will contact the next person on the list and move this book along.
