I was gripped by this story of a white Muslim girl, Lilly, orphaned in Ethiopia, trying to survive and make a life for herself in a community that treats her with hostility and suspicion. She meets and falls in love with a young doctor named Aziz... but ultimately they are driven apart by war, and Lilly escapes to England while Aziz disappears.
This book is not for the faint-hearted. As well as Lilly's own trials, it offers a glimpse of life in Africa including some absolutely harrowing scenes involving the circumcision of young girls.
