Well written, highly hyped (Oprah's Book Club) first novel by Christina Schwartz, but personally I did not find it very enjoyable.
I found it difficult to either sympathise or identify with any of the characters, except possibly Ruth herself, and felt rather manipulated by the author who seemed to put everything possible into the plot, some aspects of which seemed to me way beyond belief. Not wishing to give the story away, but I'm thinking in particular of the mother of a newly born baby who leaves her lying-in bed to cross an icy lake in sub-zero temperatures with her child.
Still, I suppose I must be wrong since everyone else seems to like it!
