Novel flits in and out of many realities but all of them contain mothers and daughters. Each story is a fascinating vignette, and together they weave the reader through a world where the Moon Lady can grant any wish, where a child promised in marriage at two and delivered at 12, can, free herself; where a rich man's concubine secures her daughter's future by killing herself and where a woman can live on knowing she has lost her entire life.

Really enjoyed it.

What a lovely surprise! This wishlist book arrived today, along with another book by the same author, and also on my wishlist, (The Bonesetter's Daughter), and a really lovely postcard of tree branches. Words written here cannot say how lovely the picture on this postcard is. I hope it can be seen from the photo I took, (by clicking on it to enlarge it)!

Thank you so much for your generosity!

Amazon Editorial Review:
WASHINGTON POST BOOK WORLD
A stunning literary achievement, THE JOY LUCK CLUB explores the tender and tenacious bond between four daughters and their mothers. The daughters know one side of their mothers, but they don't know about their earlier never-spoken of lives in China. The mothers want love and obedience from their daughters, but they don't know the gifts that the daughters keep to themselves. Heartwarming and bittersweet, this is a novel for mother, daughters, and those that love them.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

I took this book with me to church today, and after the service, when we were all having coffee, I handed it to another member of our church congregation, Joy Romeijn.
I don't expect Joy will write a journal entry here, but I do know that she will read the book one of these days, as she has read quite a few others that I have lent her recently. I have told Joy that she can decide what to do with the book after she has read it.!!

I enjoyed reading this book, and I found it interesting, but I think the stories in this book will be even more interesting to Chinese people who are living in the Western World. I learnt some things about Chinese culture differences that I didn't know before. I will now return the book to chamonix44 because I don't have anyone to pass it on to!!

I will be taking this book with me to church tomorrow, as someone in our congregation expressed an interest in reading it. If she is there, I will pass the book over to her.

Change of plan. My friend Lies asked if she could read this book, so I passed it on to her early this morning. She does have a computer and internet access, but I'm not sure if she will make a journal entry herself, or if she will ask me to do it for her.
If you are reading here, Lies, then I hope you enjoy this book!
