Now travelling in my Surprise Bookbox...
Took it out of the Surprise Bookbox (Thanks christina82 for hosting it!)
I have read Memoirs of a Geisha a few years back, which I enjoyed very much, so I was interested in reading more about the world of geisha's. And it was a nice surprise to find this one in the bookbox :)
Edit november 9th 2009: Reserved for the Contemporary Asian Literature VBB, hosted by ApoloniaX

I finished this yesterday and quite enjoyed it. I have never read a memoir/biography before and I was actually a bit surprised at the memories from when she was 2 or 3 years old (my first 5 or 6 years seem more like a blur or something..). And she didn't come across as a very likeable person.. but it was very interesting to read about the karyukai ("flower and willow world") and the life of a maiko/geiko (and the important people she met, like Queen Elizabeth II).
It also gave a rather different picture of life as a geisha compared to Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden, and showed that it had a few mistakes in it (if I remember correctly).
Oh and there were also some nice pictures in the book, which I also found very interesting :)

Happy reading!
