This is one of the best books in the Mary Russell series. If you have not read the other books in the series, this book can stand alone but it does fill in a gap in the first book in the series-The Beekeeper's Apprentice. This is a Sherlock Holmes "sequel"-the author has resurrected Sherlock Holmes from retirement and given him a strong female side kick. The writing is good, the characters strong, and I think the book is just plain fun to read.
