Hmmm another book which was made into a film and then re-released with a new movie-related cover. The title is a bit cliche but the author does a good job of evoking the lonely life of gill-net fishermen, the lush and rugged terrain of islands in the Pacific Northwest, and the tenacity of islanders who live there. The book was written some years ago but is particularly relevant these days, as it deals with the predjudices raised by the specter of war and the difference between being a white immigrant and one who looks "just like the enemy." Less of a love story than I'm guessing the film made it out to be; partly a courtroom drama, partly a tale of a man broken by war, and partly an examination of differing cultures as they live side by side. Gentler than a crime story, but reveals the plot in a similar manner.

So I've had this book for quite awhile now, always meaning to get around to it, but never devoting myself to doing so. I think 10 years is long enough. I wasn't aware that a movie was made, I hope it was true to the book. I'm not one for mysteries or whodunit's, but this one is more than that. It shows how assumptions and prejudices affect people, from both sides, even when they don't realize they are being prejudiced. Or that their assumptions end up hurting themselves more than anything. I will set this book free again, hopefully before another 10 years passes...
