"Vatanen the journalista is sick of his job and fed up with the city life. One summer evening while he is out on an assignment his car hits a young hare on a country road. Vatanen goes in search of the injured creature, and this small incident becomes a life-changing experience as he decides to travel in the wilds of Finland with his new-found friend. Their adventures take in forest fires, pagan sacrifies, military war games, killer bears and much more."

I have this book in Finnish. I've read it years ago, and don't remember that much, but as the book is considered as "a classic" already, I thought it would be perfect for this RABCK-exchange. Happy reading, ApoloniaX!

Brilliant little story, sometimes funny, sometimes sad, with a pinch of magical realism.
Thanks again Piiku!
(The book missed 8 points because Vatanen killed the bear.)

I also can only give 7 points - I liked the first 2 thirds better then the last. The first bear appearance was great but the killing wasn't - although I could kind of understand Vatanen's motivation for wanting to kill the bear. What totally irritated me was the unnecessarily brutal killing of the raven - didn't like that at all.
What I've experienced with several Paasillina-stories is that they are really elaborate in the beginning but get more and more cursory towards the end.

But all in all I liked the story pretty much

I enjoyed this book. Quiet a sweet story if you ignore the killings. I felt bad for the bear, seemed like a pointless waste of time chasing it after it was far enough away not to come back anytime soon. I wish my cat was a tame as that Hare.

Thank you very much for this book. Not something I would have picked off the shelf. But looks a good read. I have read the first two chapters already, and am enjoying it. Thanks again.

Had to read this one immediately. It intrigued me. A "little" book, with a lot happening in it! I would have liked the bear to escape after it "defected" across the border, and I too wish my cat was as tame as the hare!
Now, where to send this book next?

Have "lent" this one to a friend at my church as an introduction to BookCrossing.

The book was returned to me by my friend at church, who described it as "quite interesting". I am taking this one to Opera in the Park, to see if any of the Leeds Bookcrossers would like to read it

Charming & quirky little novel. I really enjoyed this quick read.

Visiting a friend in Prague in a couple of weeks, and will take this with me for her. Such a well travelled book deserves to explore another country - I'm sure Vatanen would approve.
