Round 1 is complete! See round 2 participants in JE below, dated February 21, 2010

Welcome to the Bizarre Fiction Bookbox. This is an invitation-only bookbox made up of reliable bookcrossers who don't use bookboxes as a dumping ground!!! I'm glad to have all of you as participants. Here are some general guidelines:

-make a journal entry when you receive the box

-list the titles of the books you are removing and adding (with or without links). Don't forget to make journal entries for the books you take out of the box!

-add the same # of books that you remove

-mail the box to the next participant within 2 weeks. Make a journal entry when you mail it on. Media mail is fine - delivery confirmation is recommended.

-replace the box when it starts to get beat up

-I'd like everyone to feel comfortable choosing any book they want when the box reaches them, no matter who has it on their wishlist. So, although it's a thoughtful gesture, please don't reserve or save books for a specific bookcrosser.

There's no limit to the # of books you may remove! Add your odd, quirky, peculiar, mind-bending, darkly comic or just plain weird works of fiction (in generally good condition) to this box. No Children's books. No paranormal romance or witch/vampire/werewolf books. {I admit to being a True Blood/Sookie Stackhouse addict, but this bookbox is not intended for that genre.} No horror (ie. Stephen King/Dean Koontz/John Saul), no hard-core sci-fi (Star Trek, Star Wars) and no Harry Potter/wizard/unicorn type fantasy...you get the idea. If you're not sure, ask me! I love getting PMs.

--------------------------

I know that life sometimes gets in the way of Bookcrossing, so if you need to opt out or have any other concerns, no worries. Just PM me to let me know.

Here's what I'm adding:

The Book of Illusions by Paul Auster (removed)
The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson (removed)
Beat the Reaper by Josh Bazell (removed
Sleeping in Flame by Jonathan Carroll (removed)
Half Asleep in Frog Pajamas by Tom Robbins (removed)
Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell (removed)
The Wasp Factory by Iain Banks (removed)
Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood removed
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami (removed)
The Brief History of the Dead by Kevin Brockmeier (removed)
The Road by Cormac McCarthy (removed)
Dexter in the Dark by Jeff Lindsay (removed)
What Dreams May Come by Richard Matheson (removed)
Bones of the Moon by Jonathan Carroll (removed)
Sum: Forty Tales from the Afterlives by David Eagleman (removed)
The Death of Vishnu by Manil Suri (removed)
No Country For Old Men by Cormac McCarthy (removed)
The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore (removed)
Added later on (I sent them to mrsjones to add to the box as replacement books):
An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England by Brock Clarke (removed)
The Ghost in Love by Jonathan Carroll (removed)
Ablutions by Patrick deWitt (removed)
Isis by Douglas Clegg (removed)
Birthday by Koji Suzuki (removed)

Thanks for joining and let's have some fun!

Journal Entry 3 by Guinneth from Manchester, New Hampshire USA on Thursday, August 6, 2009
The Bizarre Bookbox has arrived safely on my doorstep (and I've written the BCID# in it!) There are SO many good books here, so I'm going to take my time making my selections over the next few days.

Thanks again for inviting me, time-traveler!

Journal Entry 4 by Guinneth from Manchester, New Hampshire USA on Monday, August 10, 2009
Just an update: chambejd is out of town this week, so I'll be sending the box her way towards the end of the week just to be safe. *I* will be out of town NEXT week, but should still be online in case (God forbid) anything goes awry.

I'm having a great time making my selections!! ;-)

Journal Entry 5 by Guinneth from Manchester, New Hampshire USA on Tuesday, August 11, 2009
I think I've finalized my choices, although there were several selections that I put back for various reasons. I really want to read the Dexter books, but prefer to read the first two first so it seemed unnecessary to hoard #3. I keep thinking that I should try Christopher Moore again, but suspect that I like the *idea* of Christopher Moore better than his books themselves. I almost took Bones of the Moon, but didn't want to greedily claim both Carroll selections. I'd already grabbed Sleeping in Flame and it will be my first book by him.

Thank you for putting together such a GREAT selection, time-traveler! I hope that when the box returns home, you find some marvelous new fiction awaiting you inside.

I took these books:
What Dreams May Come
Sum: Forty Tales From the Afterlives
The Wasp Factory
The Road
The Brief History of the Dead
Sleeping in Flame
The Gargoyle

And I replaced them with these books:
The Tooth Fairy by Graham Joyce
Shipwrecks by Akira Yoshimura
The Sundial by Shirley Jackson
Out Stealing Horses by Per Petterson
A Crackup At the Race Riots by Harmony Korine
Exquisite Corpse by Poppy Z. Brite
The Veritas Conflict by Shaunti Feldhahn

I took a couple of bookmarks from the bag (and thanks also for the delivery confirmation slips; I'll put one of those to good use as well), and I added some other goodies: a postcard, a bookmark, and some bookplates, both BC and non-.

I thoroughly enjoyed participating in this box. I'll make another JE when I mail it off, which will be either Thursday or Friday.

Edited the above post to reflect that I also took Shipwrecks (couldn't resist the dark description) and included Alice Hoffman's The Ice Queen.

Whew! I'm a book hog. I have mrsjones' address and hope to have the box in the mail again in the next couple of days. I'll journal again once it's shipped. Thanks again!

Journal Entry 14 by time-traveler from Peekskill, New York USA on Sunday, October 4, 2009
Thank you mellion108 for listing all the books that are currently in the box. That must have been very time consuming. For some reason chambejd refused to play nice and did not journal any of the books that she removed...(From what I can tell she removed The Tooth Fairy, The Book of Illusions, Oryx and Crake, Dexter in the Dark). I apologize to the remaining participants for the nonfiction, and non-bizarre books that chambejd added to the box.

Update:

On 10/07/09 I mailed 5 additional bizarre books to mrsjones who is kindly helping me by removing the 5 nonbizarre books that are in there. I asked her to remove The Forest Lover, White Teeth, Dancing Naked at the Edge of Dawn, Bad Cats, and Women of the Silk.

The books I sent to mrsjones as replacement books are Isis, The Ghost in Love, Ablutions, Birthday, and An Arsonist's Guide to Writers' Homes in New England. The delivery conformation # for this package of 5 books is: 0308 2040 0002 0363 9145.

Phew I feel better now :)

Journal Entry 15 by Guinneth from Manchester, New Hampshire USA on Monday, October 5, 2009
Just wanted to chime in and say that it appears she removed Out Stealing Horses, also.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming...

Thanks again, everyone!

Journal Entry 31 by time-traveler from Peekskill, New York USA on Sunday, February 21, 2010
Round 2 begins with this Journal Entry!

There's no limit to the # of books you may remove! Add your odd, quirky, peculiar, mind-bending, darkly comic or just plain weird works of fiction (in generally good condition) to this box. -list the titles of the books you are removing and adding (with or without links). Don't forget to make journal entries for the books you take out of the box!

-mail the box to the next participant within 2 weeks. Make a journal entry when you mail it on. Media mail is fine - delivery confirmation is recommended.

-I'd like everyone to feel comfortable choosing any book they want when the box reaches them, no matter who has it on their wishlist. So, although it's a thoughtful gesture, please don't reserve or save books for a specific bookcrosser.

I found that I still have leftover several of the bizzare books I saved for the swap. Am I such a weirdo? Eitherway I am ready for the round 3!

ETA: Has been a rainy few days but should be able to mail it off this week.

ETA: Sorry but this didn't get mailed till Oct 7. My hubby offered to help me mail it, as it's such a heavy box and he goes to the post office every few days at work anyway. So it sat in his car for a few days, then got moved out as he need some trunk space, and everytime I asked him he said he'd mail it tomorrow. Finally yesterday I just went and did it myself. Funny thing I don't even think he noticed that the box was gone...

Yay! it's here! It's pretty big...I could hardly get it up the stairs! I have some books ready, so I'll try to get it sent back out again fairly quickly. Thanks!

I put in: Willful Creatures
The Butterfly Effect
The Normals
and Lullaby

I took out:
Knifeboy
The Dissident
Diary
and The Curious Incident of the dog in the night time

Thanks for letting me join~ Sorry it's taken me so long to send it off.
I'm sending it to hyphen8 in Hawaii next...may take a bit, but she
wanted me to wait a little while anyway.
Thanks!

Wow, this is a big box! It arrived today, along with another box of books..so I have my work cut out for me.

I still need to register some of the books I'm thinking of putting in, but I'll get this back out again as soon as I can.

The box itself is not in good shape so I'm replacing it, but I've put the BCID in several places inside the new box to make sure it's seen. I have msjoanna's address and plan to send out the box tomorrow.

Update March 2011: OOPS! I just figured out that I listed the books I took out here but I never actually JOURNALED those books. I'm sure I meant to, but it doesn't seem to have happened. I'm doing it now. Sorry everyone!

The box is with me. This is an awesome selection. In fact, last night, I started flipping through one of the books and ended up reading the whole book without getting up again. I'll probably leave that one in the box for someone else to enjoy.

I'll make more definitive selections soon. With holidays and travel, I'm afraid this may not get mailed back to time-traveler until January.

Okay, I'm finally making my selections and will be mailing this box this week.

I'm taking out:

Getting Into Death
The White Hotel
Willful Creatures

I'm adding:

Replay
The Brief History of the Dead
The Great Bay: Chronicles of the Collapse

I had others that I would have taken out, but didn't have enough available this time. Look forward to the next round and sorry for the delay in moving this box forward. The holidays are killer for mailing.
