1975 Newbery Medal winner.

Don't know anything about this one, so I'll have to read it and find out! (But I do know that Virginia Hamilton writes good stuff.)

Here's another copy on my shelf.

This story is about 13-year-old Mayo Cornelius Higgins growing up in the mountains of Ohio. But of course it's really about a lot of other things too: friendship and prejudice and superstition; hope and fear and difficult choices; and singing and swimming and a really big shiny pole sticking up out of the ground!

I'm glad I read it.

Reserved for spacedog's Newbery bookrings - round 6.

Ring order:

spacedog (MA)
knitwit (PA) (skipped)

finally finished. there's no doubt that this is an extremely sophisticated book for a newbery winner. unfortunately the writing is so mature that i find it hard to believe that any kid would be able to get through it. as an adult the book certainly has its moments, but although hamilton does a great job of defining the setting and characters, the emotional growth of the main character is somewhat crammed into the last chapters and doesn't have the intended weight. still, it's one of the more impressive wins even if i wasn't much of a fan of the book itself.

I must admit this was not my favorite book. I really struggled with it and have put it down several times to read other books...I am sorry to delay the ring! The one redeeming moment was when MC was with the Killburn family.
I am glad I read this book...I am especially glad I finally finished it!!!
I will be sending this off today!
Thanks for sharing and for including me in the Newberry bookrings!

Actually didn't really love this... there's something about Virginia Hamilton's novels (see The House of Dies Drear) that I find confusing and hard to follow, like she makes these large narrative leaps or doesn't quite give the reader enough information at the start. (Love her folklore, though, so... weird). Still, I was glad to cross another Newbery off my list. Doubling back one step in the book ring then on its way home.

Oh my goodness! I never journaled this one after I read it.

Not my favorite Newbery but I think it's a book that would be better if I were to read it a second time. Perhaps I rushed through since I've had for so long. I liked the detail and the language and I even liked the story although I found the timeline a bit improbable.

Finally heading home today.
