*The Book Thief

A fantastic book about the brutality of war, the resilience of children and the courage to resist in the face of insurmountable evil. Moving, poignant and hauntingly beautiful.

I really enjoyed this. And in many places you forget the narrator is Death, and then when he(?) says something which refers to who he(?) is it gives you a little shock. A very good story, with characters I cared about. I'll remember this for a while.
Going off as my part of a trade.

This arrived today. Thanks so much fluffy owl i have wanted to read it for ages :-)
I finished this last night and was close to tears by the ending, despite death hinting at what was going to happen i had hoped it wouldn't end that way.
I loved the way the book focused on liesel and what made her happy, the small pleasures in her life and how she coped with the difficult situations she was in. It made the book seem very real.
I am going to see if it is on anybody elses wishlist and send it on.
Thanks for the swop fluffy-owl!

I really loved reading this book. Within the first few pages I could not turn the pages fast enough to see what happens, but by the last few i did not want it to end. This is a lovely story of love, and friendship in a world of prejudice and hate. I love the relationships detailed in the book, with Papa, with Rudy, and with Max. I was not convinced about the ending but overall a lovely book, highly recommend it. I have sent it off to Shahrun who is eagerly awaiting its arrival from the bookring.

Just recieved this in the Post (5 minutes ago). Thanks Jenetix! Can't wait to get stuck in, just need to finish my current read. I should be able to make a start on it today or tomorrow the BookRay it onwards!
Just finished reading this very powerful book (& dried my eyes sufficiently to be able to type this out). I have never read a book quite like this. I loved the way it was written, the use of German, the recycling of Mein Kampf, the characters and their relationships with each other. At the end I cried, then felt relieved when I remembered it was just a story. But much worse did happen then. This story is going to stay with me for a very long time. This Book is going to continue it's adventures around the world (Deutschland next), but I will look out for another copy to share with family and friends. I will get it in the post tomorrow at the latest.

05.8.2010: got here yesterday by mail. Looking forward to it. Thanks.
05.23.2010: I'm not really into reading WW2 stories, but as this book was so highly recommended I'd decided to give it a try. And it was worth it.
In the beginning I thought, it would be another Anne Frank-Story or Schindlers Liste, but it is definetly different. It about the Jews, yes, but it's only a small part of the whole. It tells a lot about how Germans are suffering, too. About how little it sometimes takes to make you happy, about friendship.... I really liked how naturally the death told his story and how 'normal' his job was and how hard at these times when he had to take so many souls at once. Really enjoyed it.

received today, thanks!
I couldn´t finish the book, not because it wasn't good, I just don't have time to read right now (have a 5 month old baby!)
in the next few days I will send it to 6of8, in the US. I already have his/her address.
I wish this book happy and safe travelling across the Atlantic!

Received in the mail on Saturday afternoon and immediately put it on the top of my TBR pile. Since I finished off a book this morning, I will start on this one tonight. Looking forward to it as I have heard nothing but fantastic reviews of this book.
Finished this book last night and cried through the last 50 pages -- always a sign of a good book! What a fabulous look at WWII Germany through the eyes of a child who has the wisdom to see the evil around her and the innocence to think she can do something about it.
Will pass this along to MuscoviteMica as soon as I get an address.

Popped in the mail this morning to MuscoviteMica -- I hope she enjoys this little book as much as I did. May we all aspire to be, if not book thieves, then word shakers, for whom love and friendship are the most powerful propaganda of all!
