Physick Book of Deliverance Dane, The
12 journalers for this copy...
I bought this on June 29th as a sort of late birthday present to myself. I guess I've been on an Ivy League kick lately.
I finished this in the wee hours this morning. I was kinda hoping for an out-and-out wizards' duel at the end, but I still really liked the story and thought it was well written.

I received this book today from stinalyn and look very forward to reading this. It shouldn't take me any longer than 2 wks as I will be on vacation from Aug7-10.
I really enjoyed this book and I liked the way the author used real historical info from the Salem Witch Trials to form the storyline and characters. The only issue I had was her use of dialect with certain characters and made some of the conversations hard to read. On a personal note, I had the pleasure of vacationing in Salem years ago and this really helped put the story into a better perspective of understanding it. Thanks stinalyn for including me in this ray and now sent off to mojosmom via USPS delivery conf # 03082690000016046467.
The book arrived today, and has been set atop the TBR pile.
I have heard both good and bad about the book, and look forward to making up my own mind about it!
Connie Goodwin is a graduate student specializing in colonial American history. She has just been accepted as a doctoral candidate at Harvard when she accedes to her mother's request to go to Marblehead to close up her grandmother's house, a house that had been sitting empty for years. Whilst clearing out the place, she finds an old Bible which contains a key with a tag on which is the name "Deliverance Dane". Her curiosity is aroused, and she begins a search for the identity of Deliverance, and for an old book, variously called a "physick book", an "almanack", a "grimoire". Meanwhile, her thesis adviser begins to behave very oddly, and the young man she meets and becomes enamoured of is the victim of a strange accident. And she, herself, begins to develop extraordinary powers.
Howe manages to capture both contemporary academic politics and 17th-century religio-social politics and creates a fascinating story of "bewitchment". She shifts easily between scenes set in 1991 and in 1692, and thus we are aware of things that will impact Connie's story before she herself knows them (in fact, she probably never knows as much as we do).
I've seen some criticism of this book on the grounds that it negatively stereotypes librarians, but I don't see it!
(Oh, there really was a Deliverance Dane, and the image with this journal entry is her husband's
Petition for restitution for Deliverance Dane, from the Massachusetts State Archives. The University of Virginia has created
an online archive of documents relating to the Salem witchcraft trials held in various special collections across New England.)

Sent to katiesmama!
Book has arrived safely in SW Florida. When I first read of this book, I added it to my To Read List. I'm looking forward to reading this, and how lucky to get it now, what with a week's vacation coming up next week:) Thank you, Stinalyn for starting this ray. I'll be checking back soon.
I enjoyed this book very much....I'll be looking for more from this author. It also made me want to read more about the Salem Witch Trials. I'm always happy when a book encourages me to read more on a particular subject.
Book was mailed today to Ctpete.
Found this waiting for me when I returned from a trip. I'll start it tomorrow.

I enjoyed this book, although I wish there had been more about the 17th century. It is now winging its way across the Atlantic!
A useful book to read when you've just finished Sacred Games Vikram Chandra.
This one is a much easier read, almost too easy and innocuous in places. The part set in 1692 was so written so much more evocatively than the current day.
Enjoyed it as a rest from concentration but I won't be nipping down to buy herbs and a cauldron!
Thanks for sharing, now it's off down the road which may take a while with a strike on
Arrived today, it looks gorgeous so can't wait to delve in. I have a few bookrings before it
I sat down curled up with a blanket, heating on full blast, plenty of cups of tea and the rain pelting against the window with this book this afternoon and read it right through to the end.
Personally I'd say that this was a comfitting read rather than anything original. I was often way further ahead than Connie the main character - can't believe an Ivy Leaguer missed some of those massive clues! That said I enjoyed the story and it has made me want to find out more about the Salem Witch Trials. Thanks for sharing. Will get the next address and post of asap.

Posted out today, hopefully it'll get there before Christmas
This has skidded in right behind three other rings, so it will have to queue a bit before I can tackle it, especially as I'm pretty well snowed under with work right now. But I look forward to cozying up to this one as soon as there's a lull. Thanks so much for making this available, and for sending.
All the best from the snowy alps! Hope this holiday season is a good one for everyone.
Set in dual eras - now (ok, 1991) and the time of the Salem witch trials. Somewhat predictable but nonetheless intriguing and very good read. As a high school student I did a research paper on witchcraft, and this reminded me of those readings, but more interesting. Hope to send this on soon, thanks so much for making it available!

Sorry for the delay... this will go into the post on Tuesday morning!
Enjoy it. It's a lot of fun.
Arrived safely in the mail today.
Thank you Stinalyn for the great bookray, and thanks to Hayes13 for passing it on to me!
Now on top of Mount To Be Read until I finish the book I'm currently reading. I will read it next and try to send it on quickly :o)
I quite enjoyed this book. I am not a history buff by nature, and it seems the only way I read about history is through well written novels that incorporate historical fact with modern story lines.
This book was easy to read, as the story line pulls you in early. Although it goes back in forth in time, the author does this in such a way that you can still easily follow the story.
Very entertaining!
I will PM arugh48187 for thier address and try to get this in the mail quickly.
The book was finally put into the mail yesterday.
I apologize for the delay, I had a sudden unexpected illness that put life on hold for a while.
Thanks again to Stinalyn for the great bookray, and to Hayes13 for passing it on to me!
Happy Reading!
It has arrived and will be here for a brief stay. I have a couple of rings in front of it, but it shouldn't tarry too long.
Excellent book. I have always been fascinated with witches and such. The story was good, though I thought Connie should have had a bit more backbone. Flipping back and forth between eras was very well done and added to the book. The Deliverance and Mercy story did not overshadow that of Connie, which was good. It was just enought to explain. I thought that the Prudence bit could have been done better. I know it was put in there to lead Connie down the right path, but it was out of order and that bothered me. All in all a good read. Thanks for sharing.

Good story, although I sort of felt with the Connie parts - how much was real??? Spells - oh I wanted to believe - and I'm sure there's some that do.
The story was good - a little romance, a bit of mystery, a villian, a creepy house - the works!
Off to it's next reader!
