Brought this one home for my father because he loves Steven Hawking stuff. He's seen the miniseries on tv, and read other ones of his book. Can't get enough.

I picked up this paperback at the Boston BCers Meetup at the Algiers; thanks!

Later: I've only read snippets from Hawking's work before, and this was a pleasant surprise - sure, he's brilliant, but he's also very funny, and I found his biographical accounts quite entertaining. Whether he's talking about his childhood, his ALS, the background of his best-known work ("A Brief History of 'A Brief History'"), or more general topics such as black holes, or public attitudes towards science, he's informative, clear, and often witty, and I enjoyed the book very much! (The final entry is one of my favorites: "Desert Island Discs" is a transcript of his appearance on a radio talk show in which the guests list the 8 records they'd want with them on a desert island, along with a book and a luxury item. His choices, and the discussion about them, is quite entertaining. Among the fun snippets: when talking about Wagner, he mentions that his voice synthesizer pronounces the name with a soft "W", and to get it to come out correctly he has to enter it as "V-A-R-G-N-E-R". I hope that since this was written he's been able to get a smarter voice-synthesizer, but the anecdote amused me anyway!)
