This is the one of the first books I read by Bryson, upon a recommendation from several friends. I found myself laughing out loud and getting strange looks from others on the subway. Trust me - it's funny in spots!

In short, it's a tale of two, middle-aged, out of shape, high school friends who attempt to hike the Appalachian Trail from it's humble beginnings in Georgia all the way to it's end in Maine. Of course, anything that can go wrong does. Bryson's humourous storytelling has a way of making you feel you are right there with him and Katz.

I'm a fan of Bryson's work and this book is one of his best, IMO. In his usual style, he infuses it with his humour, but also reflects on some very poignant tales about how we (the human race) have harmed the planet.

After reading this book, I was re-energised and wanted to tackle the AT myself. However, I figure that I wouldn't last half as long as Katz did! So, I'll setting on getting my thrills vicariously!

Also recommend: Notes from a Small Continent (if you want more Katz, that is!); and Notes from a Small Island.
