a very interesting account of a catholic unionist young man who goes to fight for britain in world war i. he's thus regarded with suspicion both at home and at the front, and his losses show how war is always about death and pain. the crude reality of the brutality of war is depicted rather tangibly, close to sebastian faulks' masterpieces. and one keeps hearing "the green fields of france in the background...
