Synopsis
From the moment Karen Blixen arrived in Kenya in 1914 to manage a coffee plantation, her heart belonged to Africa. Drawn to the intense colours and ravishing landscapes, Karen Blixen spent her happiest years on the farm and her experiences and friendships with the people around her are vividly recalled in these memoirs. "Out of Africa" is the story of a remarkable and unconventional woman and of a way of life that has vanished for ever.

I'm on a real africa themed read at the moment. Just finished Blood River by Tim Butcher, Out of Africa by Karen Blixen and i'm planning on reading Manly Pursuits by Anne Harries and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbera Kingsolver next.
Loved this book, also love the film. Would highly recommend this to anyone who loves travel books. Another one off the 1001 list. Thanks to ApoloniaX for sending it to me - sorry it sat on my shelf for so long.

Now available to a new 1001 books home upon request.

As no one has requested this from the virtual 1001 books library I decided to read it again while the UK is in lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Sometimes the simplest way to travel is with a book!

happy reading -this travel book is a great way to escape from the confines of home during the covid19 lockdown across Europe. Very dated in some of its perspectives and language which will surely give people pause for thought but informative none the less.

I found this book in my mailbox when I came back from a few days in the countryside. It was accompanied by a second book (The great Gatsby), and a lot of sweets! I was really spoiled, thanks shovelmonkey1 for being so generous!

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:

Probably not the most appropriate book to read in these days of Black Lives Matter demonstrations... Blixen is very much of her class and her times, a pure product of aristocracy and colonialism. Her language often makes you cringe, of course it's the language of that period in history. At the same time, her observations are very detailed and non judgemental, all within this European and idealized myth of "Africa". The movie makes it a great love story, when there is none of that in the book.
I mailed it today to brunton11, who is next in line for this bookray. Don't worry, mail is very slow between France and the UK these days. Enjoy!
