Burmese Days is a picture of one of the backwaters of the British Empire as Orwell experienced it as a Police Officer. The grossness and hypocrisy of the British and the whining corruption of the natives are here anatomized in a story of one man's doomed attempt to escape from the pettiness of life in an up-country Burmese town.
