I was totally unprepared for how Western this was in its style, unlike Waiting, by Ha Jin, that was written in an Asian circular style. This is a book I appreciated, more than enjoyed. Off to Fredericton, NB

Got this in the mail today. Thanks so much pinewood21093! This will be going off on a bookray shortly.

I finished this in record time this weekend. It was a cute little story and an interesting look at the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the forced "re-education" of their youth, things I knew nothing about. It's hard to imagine not being allowed to read certain (actually most) books! What a nightmare!

Since there is so much interest in this book, I'm making it a bookray. I'm sending it off to roadrunner tomorrow so she can read it for her Book Club in August (shouldn't take you more than 2 days to read it!). The order or the ray is:

roadrunner - Texas
woodsroy - Fredericton
vhackett - Fredericton
RealBookWorm - Fredericton
cestmoi - Toronto
nkwriter - Toronto
16stepper - Arizona
Hawkette - Australia (who can do whatever she wants with the book when she's done)

I arrived home from vacation to find Balzac patiently waiting for me. Thank you, MissQ for moving me up in the bookray to accomodate my book group! I read half last night and will finish tonight. I'll make some notes and then send Balzac on its merry way!

This is a nice story about growing up and the love of reading. It has lots of information about China's Cultural Revolution and "re-education". A quick read and well worth it! This book is off to Woodsroy - the next stop on the bookray. Enjoy!

Journal Entry 7 by woodsroy from Dieppe, New Brunswick Canada on Saturday, August 9, 2003
I received the book in the mail yesterday. I'll write more later.

Maybe I was expecting too much, or maybe I was simply distracted by other things in my life, but I could not get involved in this book. I found the story interesting enough though. I cannot imagine living in a world where books are forbidden. I hope I never have to.

Journal Entry 9 by vhackett from Fredericton, New Brunswick Canada on Tuesday, September 2, 2003
woodsroy sent this along today and I'm looking forward to reading it...it's next on my TBR list! :-)

I finished this book up on the weekend. It was a very quick read - perhaps too quick. It certainly opened my eyes to the forced "re-education" that occured in China but I was left wanting to know more about the main characters... I believe RealBookWorm is next on the list - will be sending off to her shortly.

Journal Entry 11 by RealBookWorm on Saturday, September 27, 2003
Just received this today from MissQ. I'll read it right away so I can send it out to cestmoi next week.

Journal Entry 12 by RealBookWorm on Wednesday, October 1, 2003
I finished reading this last night but due to the fact I got hit with a flu-like illness, I didn't journal it until today. I'm pretty sure it wasn't the book or the story that made me sick. ;)

It wasn't really the kind of book I enjoy a lot but I'm glad I read it. It was interesting to see how they lived and how they managed without books. I didn't rate it very high but I couldn't justify a higher number. I probably wouldn't recommend it to others.

Finished this today while lounging in bed with a cold. I really enjoyed this simple story. There was so much passion in this novel, passion for storytelling, music and for a better life and the passion that they managed to find, in such a dreary, hard existence, every day and to think that hearing stories made a young girl decide she wanted a different kind of life for herself!

Thanks for sharing this. I'll be passing it along to nkwriter this weekend.

Got this in the mail this weekend. I am looking forward to it, but I won't be able to get to it for a couple of weeks, unfortunately. I try to be as fast as I can.

Yikes! I think I either didn't realize or forgot that this was a bookray. I'll read it this week and send it out on the weekend. Sorry.

Really enjoyable book, very well written. The main point I carried away from it is the universality of certain emotions -- lust, pride, vanity -- that you just cannot legislate or punish out of people.

Lovely writing style, and I learned a lot about the cultural revolution. I didn't enjoy the last 1/3 of the story, when things got dark. But this is a fascinating read.

Hawkette is passing on this one, so I shall try to find a reader for it.
