bought for the TBC June read; then RABCK to Joanne from work. Spare, haunting work about WWII. Bruno's father is the commander in charge at "out-with" (auschwitz). Told from Bruno's 9yo point of view, he goes 'exploring' and meets Schmuel, who lives on the other side of the fence. For a year, they meet each afternoon and talk, until one day Bruno decides to see what's on the other side of the fence....

I came home from vacation to find this book awaiting me and it was a wonderful surprise along with all the "goodies" inside. NancyNova thank you so very much for the Rabck!!
A simple but powerful story of nine year old Bruno who befriends a boy named Shmuel and journeys beyond the fence of "out-with" (Auschwitz) where his father is a Commandant. I really enjoyed reading this book and will definitely pass it on first to my daughters then maybe a bookring/ray. Thanks again nancynova for the rabck!

What a wonderful surprise I got today when I received your large package of goodies! I am so very pleased to get this book, and I am really looking forward to reading it. (I visited Auschwitz 4 years ago, and it was worse than I ever could imagine)!
Congratulations on your two year BC anniversary! May you have many more to come.
What else was inside this wonderful package....not ONE, not TWO, but THREE other wishlist books and THREE lovely bookmarks! Thank you so very much. Your generosity is so much appreciated.

At last I got around to reading this book. I was about to start it earlier this year, but then the film from this book came on television. So after that I thought I had better wait a while longer to read it as I didn't want the memories from the film to spoil the book for me. As bookcrosser ravencat wrote, this is a simple, yet powerful story. Very sad. A book which everyone should read.
Whilst I was reading it I wondered why no one ever found out that Bruno was going near to "the fence" every day for a year. Wasn't he ever missed at home?
This book will now at last continue its journey. It will soon be travelling to JPix , whom I tagged in the Wishlist Tag Game.
