Looking forward to reading this, the first novel by Nicci French.

It was nice to read a Nicci French that didn't scare me silly. Instead I simply found myself changing my mind at regular intervals over who the murderer was.

Jane and Natalie were childhood friends as a result of their fathers' friendship. The two families grew up together with Jane marrying one of Natalie's brothers. Except Jane didn't grow up. She disappeared as a teenager only for her body to turn up when excavations begin for the extension to her parents' home.

I will just say "nothing is what it seems".....

I have read many many Nicci French novels before, yet strangely not the first novel they wrote until now (at least I think this is the first). Often with thriller writers I find the first book is a bit of a let down compared to subsequent books. Whilst I wouldn't say this was a let down, I would say it's not one of my favourite or most 'thrilling' of their novels. Towards the end I had worked out 'whodunnit' and earlier on where another part of the story was going (trying to be deliberately vague to not give things away.) I was also a bit disappointed with the ending. In fact I went back and checked to see if there was some pages missing as it seemed to end without warning. It was almost as if they had a word count maximum and on finding they were near the limit had wrapped things up quickly with a big jump in plot in to explain things in a hurry.
