If the River Was Whiskey

A really engaging set of short stories by the modern master of pop fiction. You usually don't think of writers as performers, but on this set of cassettes, T.C. himself reads his stories with a full range of heartfelt and funny voices that is totally convincing. I hear a little Woody Allen, Spalding Gray, John Irving, Michael Moore, Dave Barry and Tom Tommorrow in these stories, written in the 80s and 90s. This is a must-listen for any T.C. fan and a good intro to his work. "Zapatos" is a hilarious shoe scam, "Sorry Fugu" is the revenge of a restaurant owner on a scathing food critic, "Modern Love" is a Woody Allen-esque look at love in the latex-age, and "The Miracle at Ballinspittle" is a gem that will make everyone laugh at the excesses of life and religion. Chock-full of R-rated language and adult themes, this one is not for the under-teen crowd. Not that I myself didn't sneak a George Carlin tape or two when I was a kid ;)!!
Sending in trade to Basia626 in Baltimore. Enjoy!!
Thanks, lightwavz, for this swap! Will plan a release at Kernan Rehab Hospital (where I work) after I have a listen, of course! We are trying to build up a books-on-tape library for our spinal cord injury patients!
