Wanting
6 journalers for this copy...
Generously donated to me to start the Miles Franklin Bookring challenge - this book has been short listed for the 2009 Miles Franklin Award, see DrCris' bookshelf for details of all the rings/rays. (I do have my own copy of this book, but got all a bit Inner Greedy Child about letting go of it, and then Jubby found another pristine copy, second hand. Hurrah for Jubby!)

Wanting is here! Thanks GTM.
It joins the flood of bookrings that have arrived in August.
I can't resist saying this, "I've been really WANTING to read this". IT's my first Flanagan novel. I have 2 others waiting on the bookshelf for me but haven't quite got there yet.
I've read a couple of fictional variations on Dickens life this year Jack Maggs and the Girl in the Blue Dress. I've also, read Great Expectations, so it appears I'm having a bit of a Dickens of a year. I'm really interested to see how this matches up to the others.

Read 28-30 August 2009
Pages: 252.
Well, the story about Mathinna was far more powerful then the Dickens part. In fact, I didn't feel that the Dickens parts were as well developed as in the other fictional accounts I've read this year. But the parts set in Tasmania more than make up for it.
Richard Flanagan has published some notes on the major characters on his website and I was interested to see a link to a drawing of Mathinna.
I'll also be interested to see if Breath is as good as this one.
I've also got Ice here to send to Dr Chris, so if it is ok with everyone else, I'll take up TQD's offer to pass it along as suits, and pass this along to Dr Chris next.
DrChris asked to be skipped for the moment, so it's back to the normal program and on to Freelunch next, as soon as I finish one other book so both books can travel in the same book baggie.

received today, thanks FreePages (and thanks to tqd for making this book available)
I might sit on this one for a month or so as I owe books to a few people (again!) and I imagine livrecache is in a similar situation :)

I started on this book today and it has failed the 50-page-test for me in a big way. everyone is too miserable for me.
my reading has tapered off in the past six months and in order to kick-start it I'm avoiding anything that might expand my horizons as a reader, its strictly comfort-zone material for me for the forseeable future..

I do apologise. I've had this book in my possession for quite some time – and even started reading it when I got it, but I'll have to start again, as it's too long ago now. I've been backing and forthing across Bass Strait, and trying to work things out for our eventual move to Hobart within the next couple of months, so I've been fairly distracted. I'm trying to catch up with a lot of things now, BC being among them.
Thanks for sharing TQD.

Abject apologies for holding this book up for so long. I've PM'd jubby and will send it off today.
Not read. Taking to a book fair tomorrow in the hope that someone will appreciate it.
