For 15-year-old Michael, a chance meeting with an older woman leads to far more than he ever imagined. Before long they embark on a passionate, clandestine love affair which leaves Michael both euphoric and confused. For Hanna is not all she seems.

Years later, as a law student observing a trial in Germany, Michael is shocked to find Hanna in the dock. The woman he loved is a war criminal. Much about her behaviour during the trial does not make sense. Hanna must answer for a horrible crime, but she is desperately concealing an even deeper secret ...

Having heard such good things about this book, I couldn't believe it when I found it in a charity shop for £2.00 so I snapped it up and am very much looking forward to reading it.

This book is a quick read but a very thought-provoking one. It will stay with you long after you read the last page. There is no doubt that the war and anti-semitism marked many lives as does the problem of learning difficulties (you daren't say illiteracy these days) and this latter problem is much more prevalent than it should be and not just in the so-called undeveloped world but in the West too. You need to be able to communicate in order to solve problems either on a personal level or globally and lack of literacy limits communication. I'm married to a twin. They communicated telepathically so were late learning to talk and both had trouble reading and writing, partly because they were both left-handed and the school tried to force them to use their right hands. I suspect dyslexia was involved too but, even now, some teachers refuse to recognise that condition. I consider myself fortunate to have been able to read this book and share my thoughts.

Good to see you Jean. How about Leicester later on in June? I've wanted to read this book ever since the clips of the film were being shown at Oscars time. Thank you.

Thought provoking. I was interested in the hidden layers; of information not revealed, emotions not shared, pride...and all of this packaged in a national guilt. Hanna's query "What would you have done?" is too close to the mark.
Beautifully, unemotionally written. Thankyou, Tanamo for sharing.

Oops, just realised I read this a while ago and forgot to journal. Sorry! From what I remember, it was a gripping book and I agree with the previous readers' verdict of 'thought-provoking'.

I'm not sure I gave this book my full attention as I read it while travelling. However it was a book that could be picked up and put down whenever. The storyline felt somewhat rushed. I was expexting great relevations but they never came!
