"Merle, whose The Day of the Dolphin was a literary smash, creates in this powerful, provocative work a post-nuclear Swiss Family Robinson who must learn to survive and rebulid their world. The record of how they go about it results in a novel of excitement and adventure and, at the same time, a profound statement on man's baseness and nobility ", so says the Boston Sunday Globe.

This is one of my three all time favorite end-of-the-world SF novels. The other two would be "Atlas, Baboylon" and "Lucifier's Hammer". Translated from French, the story takes place in France at an Old English Castle known as Malevil. Merle sets the story up quickly and then unleases the nuclear holocaust. The story is now off and running. There are survivors in the castle's wine celler. Some have lost family in the near by village. Over time a few others are found....with some difficulties arising. There are also straving urban roaming group. But at last things start to improve, until a priest arrives. Merle is some what anti-chruch, but that is just one of the before the DAY ideas he takes on. Read and enjoy. There are plot twist aplenty.
