Short stories by one of my favourite Canadian authors. To read and release.

I do love reading Birdsell's short stories. Her characters, like those of Margaret Laurence and Alice Munro, become real people to the reader, living real lives. While they might be involved in situations that you've never been in (or ever would hope to be in, as is the case in "Disappearances" where a couple are taking a motor trip to Saskatoon where, you learn, her daughter will stand trial for murder), you can understand them, relate to them, hope for them, laugh and cry with them.

This was not my favourite read of all time though. While I enjoyed it, there was something lacking such that I came away from the book reasonably contented but at the same time slightly disappointed. The writing was understated and gentle, which is nice and something I enjoy most of the time. However at the time I read it, it seemed to lack sparkle or oomph. Perhaps it was my own mood at the time and I was in need of a bit more drama than this book ultimately gave me.

I ought read it again and give it another chance but I probably won't. I plan to release the book in a month or so for gypsysmom's Canada Day release challenge.
