Greedy me! I picked this up at Salcey Forest today, thinking how good it sounded from reading the back, then when I get home I realise I already have a non BC copy. Ooops! Will mark as 'available' until I re-release it.

From Fantastic Fiction....
It's 1957 and Lewis Aldridge is travelling back to his home in the South of England. He is straight out of jail and nineteen years old. His return will trigger the implosion not just of his family, but of a whole community.
A decade earlier, his father's homecoming casts a different shape. The war is over and Gilbert reverts easily to suburban life — cocktails at six-thirty, church on Sundays — but his wife and young son resist the stuffy routine. Lewis and his mother escape to the woods for picnics, just as they did in wartime days. Nobody is surprised that Gilbert's wife counters convention, but they are all shocked when, after one of their jaunts, Lewis comes back without her.

----------------------------

I thought this was quite an intriguing read, and felt really sorry for Lewis - especially when he was young!! I can't believe his father was so cold towards him, and probably blame him for all the 'bad'.

Will take this to the uncon with me at the weekend, and see if anyone else fancies it!!

From the back of the book, it sounded like it might be good ...

Lewis' mother drowns in his sight when he is quite young and neither he nor his father know how to deal with it. Trying to cope in their different ways they drift apart and the consequences are more far-reaching than either can imagine. From the perspective of a culture where everyone knows the stages of grief, we can see exactly where things go wrong and can predict that there will be no easy and trite happy ending. So yes, some of it is cliched - particularly the distant Gilbert and flirtatious Tamsin - but it is ultimately moving.
