A Dark-adapted Eye

I prefer Barbara Vine's psychological mysteries to Ruth Rendell's procedurals, and this is one of my favorites. The protagonist tries to unravel a family tragedy for which her aunt was hung. I actually first caught this very fine story on PBS' Mystery, but the book is really outstanding.

I just received this book from FuryIII, thank you. Ruth Rendell is my favorite mystery author.
I saw this book on the go hunting pages and was thrilled to find it still there! I absolutely love Barbara Vine/Ruth Rendell so this is a treat. Thanks Watergirl!
I too prefer Barbara Vine's psychological mysteries to Ruth Rendell's police procedurals...and this book certainly proved why. It's dark and moody and captures characters and builds up situations so brilliantly.
She writes such compelling characters and can create a feeling of menace even when describing events that happened thirty years ago and you somewhat know the outcome. I especially enjoyed the relationship between Vera, the murderess, and her beautiful younger sister Eden, told from the point of view of the narrator of the story, a cousin who goes to live with them during World War ll.
