If you're new to BookCrossing - welcome! I hope you will enjoy the site as much as I have. BookCrossing is about spreading literature around the world for free. Please make a journal entry for the book you have found so we can see where it travels to next. You can do this anonymously if you like but if you decide to join (its free!!) please consider entering me (NICNIC2) as your referring member. I don't receive anything for this but I like knowing that I've encouraged someone else to catch the BookCrossing bug! Happy reading!!

My thoughts on the book (spoiler warning!):

Well, I didn't see that coming...

I finished this today after my lunch break when I should have been working mainly, as a paltry defence, so I didn't have to bring it tomorrow for the sake of three or four pages (and because work is boring me silly at the moment).

I have to admit to being a bit non-plussed for most of this, but I'll put that down to my mood at the moment, although there were some truly heart-rending moments. I suppose we've all come across tales of injustice and such like in various guises and this novel was in essence what I was expecting when I picked it up.

I did wonder if the twist would be predictable - that Roseanne was actually mad and not wrongly commited - or of it would follow the age-old 'wrongly persecuted, finally some justice' framework. The twist at the end, with Dr Greene being Roseanne's lost child was a genuine shock. (Isn't it nice to get one of those every now and then?? literary shock I mean not a literal one :)It felt almost - dare I say it - dickensian in as much as all the characters are linked and nicely lumped together at the end.

I had read A Long Long Way by the same author and was struck by the poetic nature of the prose. One of the quotes on the edition of secret scripture I have says 'he writes like an angel' and, while I think 'angel' is a bit OTT, I get the point. There are some beautiful passages in this book, especially towards the end.

On its way to flutterbies9 for a NSS mission :)

Journal Entry 3 by Flutterbies9 from Meare, Somerset United Kingdom on Wednesday, June 17, 2009
Really don't know what went wrong here. I put an entry in here at the weekend when I received the book but it has not registered!?!

I received this from the postman just after 1.00 pm on Saturday, the NSS parcel was posted around 11.00 am the same morning. So, I'm afraid it only just missed the NSS but I'm not too worried by that. I intend to read this and then pass it on to my NSS partner anyway, probably as a RABCK, as I know she wants it also.

Many thanks for your sterling efforts and I'll be in touch once it is read (after the book I'm reading on a current bookring).

This was an extremely well written and sympatheticly narrated story told by the two main characters, both tragic in their own ways. I found it very moving and loved how the circle completed for the characters at the end. I have not read any by this author before but will be looking out for his earlier book now (wishlist here I come!).

I have a plan in mind for this book and will sort it out this week.

What a lovely and unexpected surprise! So thoughtful of you, thank you!
I have wanted to read this book for a long time, am looking forward to getting stuck in, once I've got through the bookrings that are here - if baby Mollie ever stays asleep for long enough!
Thanks again, you've brought a smile to a frazzled new mum's face :)
