The book is an interesting look at the history of words, but I found the voice of the authors kind of distracting & annoying. I hope other readers aren't as grouchy!

Thank you, labmomnm. This book looks interesting.

This contains a huge amount of information about Latin and the languages from which Latin is derived: Etruscan, Greek, Phoenician, and more. This book also explores the etymology of words belonging to modern languages and any language developing after the time of the Roman Empire. Much of the information is interesting but the delivery of this information can be confusing. The book ends in a strange way, going into great detail about the development of Roman numerals and stopping in an abrupt way, almost like a play ending without a closing act.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
This book has been mailed to MaryZee of Taneytown, Maryland who requested it from the Nonfiction VBB to which this book had been donated.
Thanks for sending this, Tabby-cat-owner. This looks like it'd make a great addition to my Biographies of Things bookbox. I'm looking forward to reading it soonishly.
Sadly, MaryZee passed suddenly in September 2012. MaryZee's daughter is now ready to rehome her mom's books and I was willing to collect and redistribute them to keep her literary legacy alive.
I see that MaryZee had planned to put this in her Biographies of Things book box. I am the current curator of that book box. I will set this book aside for inclusion in the next round.

I'm claiming this from the Biographies of Things bookbox; I'm always touched to find another book that's been in maryzee's possession. This one looks good!
Later: a good book to dip into at intervals, rather than trying to read it straight through. Some bits are amusing, others so in-depth that I felt I was auditing a college course! And I had to smile - I was browsing the index to see if there were entries on specific words (what, no "cat"?) and I kept spotting terms that stood out. "Carolingian minuscule", anyone? Lots of fascinating connections, too, as the topic darted from the history of the original meaning of a word to its more recent changes.
