Product Description
First published in 1934, THE POSTMAN ALWAYS RINGS TWICE caused a scandal with its explosive mix of violence and sex, and immediately became a bestseller. The torrid story of Frank Chambers, the amoral drifter, Cora, the sullen and brooding wife, and Nick Papadakis, the amiable but inconvenient husband, has become a classic of its kind, and established Cain as a major novelist with a spare and vital prose style and a bleak vision of America. THE AUTHOR James M. Cain was born in Annapolis, Maryland, in 1892. Having served in the US Army in World War 1, he became a journalist in Baltimore and New York in the 1920s. He later worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood. Cain died in 1977.

I picked this up from my 'Read, but not jounalled pile' to put in the 1001 book box, but couldn't remember anything about it. Went back to my booklists to try to put it in context and couldn't find it. So either I haven't read it after all, or I read it one long night, forgot to record that I'd done so and have lost the plot. so it's back to Mount Toobie with it.

By the time I'd finishhed the first paragraph I'd remembered it. You see, that's the problem when the blurb talks about style rather than plot. However I had taken it with me into town for a morning that I knew would be spent hanging around in financial institutions waiting to speak to people about shuffling money around, so I read it again anyway - it's a slim book, so was easier to carry around & shuffle into my bag than The Guardian. by the time I got home, I'd virtually finished it.

Anyway, to make up for the deficiencies of the back-of-the-book here's a plot summary. Frank's a drifter in Depression America who agress to work for Nick's only after he catches sight of his wife. Frank & Cora fall in love, try to get rid of Nick and find the truth of the old adage 'be careful what you wish for'. Some of the slang has dated, and Nick's the only nice person in the book, but the sttory twists and turns at a cracking pace and I'm left wanting to see the film versions.
