~ If Looks Could Kill

Just picked up this intriguing mystery set in the exciting cut-throat world of Manhattan magazine publishing -- written by the editor of Cosmo. Will make this my first book ray once I am done.
A really enjoyable, breezy read. You can tell the author is very fashion and style consious (everyone's outfit is detailed, as is every room we walk into), but it doesn't detract from the book. Interesting characters, surprising twists, good writing - highly recommended as a new author to watch out for. And the narrator's man problems ring very true.
I am now a bookray!

Starting to read this tonight (well..its morning already!). Couldn't sleep and woke up looking for something to read; I must have had too much fun tonight at dinner.
It was so nice to meet you Nina and hopefully will see you again soon!
I'll journal again when I've finished this, probably in a day or two! Mystery is still my favourite genre and I love finding new authors.

Just finished. For a first mystery novel - not bad. The loose ends were tied up well and I was guessing til right to the end...but I felt the author left out a lot of clues that she didn't throw in until right at the end - so there was no way to "guess" whodunnit. There was also one fact that was saved til the rather dramatic ending (dont' want to give it away)...that seemed too convenient for the plot wrap up. Overall though, I did enjoy it and will keep my eyes open for her next novel "A Body to Die For".
Thanks nkwriter for introducing me to yet another mystery author and series to follow!
This goes off to Tyressia on Wednesday (tomorrow is a holiday!).

Mailed to Tyressia today.
I received the book today in the mail (thanks cestmoi!). Perfect timing, as I had just finished the novel I was reading, and I was trying to figure out what to read next. So, I'll start "If Looks Could Kill" tonight, and I'll journal again when I've finished reading it. :)
Bailey Weggins, a thirty-something freelance writer becomes involved in solving a murder when she discovers the body of her boss's nanny. The story unfolds like a usual mystery - the suspects are considered one by one, and Bailey follows a number of false leads before suddenly discovering the real killer at the end of the novel.
"If Looks Could Kill" was a quick, easy read. I loved that it was set in New York City, and it was very sexy at times. It was obvious to me that White had inside knowledge of the Fashion Industry herself - every character's outfit was described in lengthy detail, and that helped me form a detailed picture of each character in my mind's eye.
Unfortunately, I felt that the story dragged in places. Bailey followed one lead after another, but without any real depth or insight. Just one task after another, as if I was watching someone go through their daily routine - and it stirred up about that same level of excitement. The writing style was very simple. It was meant to be edgy at times, using slang and words someone young might utter, and I suppose it fit in with the New York theme. The entire tone of the novel was very light, even while it tackled such a heavy topic as murder.
As far as the characters go, I liked Landon best out of all of them, and I wish he had been given more depth as a character. Unfortunately, he only appeared in a couple of scenes. The same was true of Jack, who I also instantly liked. Oddly enough, I didn't quite take to any of the women, including Bailey herself. They all seemed aloof, whiny, and just slightly out of my grasp and understanding.
Bottom line: a light, entertaining read, but simplistic and predictable in the end.
The book will head out to net on Monday. :)

Received in the mail today (thanks tyressia!) I have one book to finish, then I'll start this one. I'll journal again when I'm done.
This would have made a great beach book. Unfortunately, I didn't make it to the beach this week. An entertaining, easy read. Sending it off to ladyofunicorns when I next get to the Post Office.
Received this bookray! I am adding to my pile of rays/rings to be read and as soon as I am done, I will make another journal entry!
Pretty good book! Had problems putting it down! Hope everyone else enjoys it!
