Journal Entry 1 by Danielle23 from Sunderland, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Monday, March 30, 2009
'As macabre as a Jacobean tragedy, as frivolous as a Restoration comedy, Iris Murdoch's fifth novel takes sombre themes - adultery, incest, castration, violence and suicide - and yet succeeds in making of them a book that is brilliantly enjoyable.'

This will be heading out on a bookray when I have read it. Participants so far;

cat207 AUS (Intl)
Bjorg ICELAND (Europe)
Jozebedee UK (UK)
cally-c UK (EU)
DryKid UK (UK)
shovelmonkey1 UK (UK)

Finished this book and loved it, one of my favourites from Iris Murdoch. I found it full of constant surprises and it had me thinking 'oh my, whatever can happen next?'

I did however want to smack a little bit of sense into Martin at times, you'll see what I mean ;)

I liked this one a lot, although I found the situations a little bit intense. I wouldn't personally be happy to put up with the aspects of the relationships! Overall well worth its 1001 status I think :-)

Started reading this today... after tardily leaving it on the TBR pile as I was last on the bookray list for this one. Sorry for hogging it. It'll be on the move soon.

Journal Entry 17 by shovelmonkey1 at Liverpool, Merseyside United Kingdom on Thursday, October 28, 2010
Well, what a messed up little love pentangle that was. I didn't really have any sympathy for any of the characters, aside from Georgie Hands who seemed to get passed around like some kind of pet or trophy or bargaining tool, depending on whose emotional clutches she was in at the time. Like cat207 I also failed to observe any castration in the novel (at one point I was wondering where the samurai sword might swing) but I suspect the castration is the implied mental castration of some of the characters, especially Martin who is largely responsible for creating a number of emotionally stunted situations and with each twist he becomes less and less powerful.
Thanks to danielle23 for being patient - i've had this book for a year!
ps the cover of this book also freaks me out a bit!

On Tuesday night, I came home to the pleasant surprise of finding a book in my mailbox and then finding a lovely postcard tucked inside the book. I had to brag to my friends on Facebook. (Hopefully, at least a few of them will take interest in the site.)

Thanks, shovelmonkey1, for sending this along! I look forward to reading it and will have it in the mail again soon.

I know I've had this one quite a while, but I'm afraid I've been having a hard time getting into the story. I'm not sure if it has more to do with the fact that I've been extremely busy with work and exhausted as a result or with the story itself. *sigh* My apologies.

Anyway, I'll have this in the mail tomorrow. (The post office is closed today.) Thanks for sharing, and happy reading!

Journal Entry 23 by wingoppemwing at Hermiston, Oregon USA on Friday, February 4, 2011
Arrived in post today - thanks allthesepieces for sending me A Severed Head.. ( I love saying that)....
I am currently reading a bookray and am going to try and read this next. That said, we go away end of next week for 2weeks & I dont like taking books with me to read that need to come back with me ( always leave them somewhere). SO, if it doesn't get read prior to my leaving, please accept my apologise in advance for a slight delay..
Thanks for sending & am looking forward to the read.

Journal Entry 24 by wingoppemwing at Hermiston, Oregon USA on Friday, March 4, 2011
Just finished reading this book & what an enjoyable read it was. Iris Murdoch at her best and she is always GOOD. Love her style of writing - loved the characters & the twisting & turning plot which took me totally be surprise a couple of times at least. I was kept on tender-hooks at times waiting to see what might happen with 'the samauri sword'...
All in all an excellent read.
Will be sending it off to mafarrimond next monday.
