This is the comic and shocking history of Stuart Shorter - inadequate thief, hopeless hostage-taker and charming, disturbing raconteur.

Stuart: A Life Backwards is not just a biography but also the story of an extraordinary friendship between two very different men - one a reclusive writer living in Cambridge, the other a homeless beggar living on the streets outside his door. Told with humour, horror and exasperation, it is a prize-winning bestseller that is an extraordinary and unexpected as the life it describes FROM THE BOOK BLURB

I live 30 minutes from Cambridge, and visit the city often, but I have only glimpsed it's underbelly from afar when passing the Big Issue seller without making eye contact, or stepping around the body begging on the pavement. This book really brought home to me the many possible stories behind those people I take pains to ignore. Heartbreaking in places, this book opened my eyes to the desperate situations people find themselves in, often through no fault of their own. Well written with a genuine warmth, tempered with flashes of frustration, Masters' book should be a "must-read" for all of us lucky to be living a comfortable life with our family and friends. The subject matter is not always an easy read, but I'm sure that this book will be fundamental in helping to change attitudes towards the homeless.
