Marjane Satrapi, a daughter of educated Marxists in Iran, tells of her childhood during the Islamic Revolution and the Iraq war, and her time as a student in Austria in a famous graphic novel.
This was a very good read. The depiction of life in Iran is fascinating, and Satrapi keeps it at the level of the child she was then. It makes for an interesting picture, seeing her getting told certain things or behaving in certain manners without really understanding what is going on, but yourself knowing what it's all about.
The second part, of her life in Austria, isn't quite as interesting, but it still has much to say about what can happen when different cultures meet. And she does return back to Iran, after the Iraq war is over, and is able to understand much more.
The drawing style is very simple, but it works well. Even with this style, the faces are expressive and distinctive. And it fits well with the overall childlike tone of the early parts of the book.

Wow, VariC guessed right. I'm quite interested in Islamic culture - but I have never read (or even seen!) a graphic novel about it. This was a great surprise, thank you so much!

I usually don’t read graphic novels, but I just loved this one! It was incredibly interesting, and gave a slightly different perspective to everyday life in Iran. Even though the issues were partly brutal (or just sad), the story was full of humor as well. I also liked the simple drawings a lot. Thank you again, VariC for sharing this gem.

Like Piiku, I don't read graphic novels much either, but I also loved this one. :) Satrapi's style and narration just rock! That's all I can say.

I will offer this book in our picnic meeting in Puolalanpuisto park. In case nobody wants it, I will bring it back home and find a new reader later. I hope someone takes this though - excellent read!

The book finally found someone who loves graphic novels and comics :) I can't believe it's about islamic culture and life - isn't there a great controversy on depicting a person..?

How could I rate this book? A book that's someone else's life. How could I say what's wrong with it or what more should have been there? All I know is that it stopped me, touched me and gave me a bit more understanding on a country, its people, culture and another view to the realities of life.

Many of the bookcrossers at the Turku/Tampere meetup had already read this book, I heard lots of positive comments about this graphic novel. So it finally ended in my bag...

This graphic novel is also a full-blown autobiography, and as such, one of the best I have met. Simply enjoyable, with its well-balanced mixture of political and cultural clear-sightedness and personal sincerity. Just great. Thanks to you all for recycling!

Ruzena, you are something! Thank you so much for the wishlistbook! I'm looking forward to read this and use the beautiful bookmark as well. How well the anecdote fits into bookcrossing life:D
I just had to read it right away, even though I tried to read it slowly to make it last longer... Absolutely a great read! A totally new perspective to islamic culture and life. Sad and devastating but also warm and funny. So that being said, now I would love to read other books by Satrapi.
Thanks very much for sharing this book, VariC and also ruzena for fulfilling my wish. I need to think carefully where the book goes next.

I have previously read Embroideries by Marjane Satrapi and I liked it a lot, so I'm looking forward to reading Persepolis too. Thank you!
Like all the previous readers, I too loved Persepolis! I could relate to Marjane very well and loved reading 20 years of Iranian history through her experiences. Of course, she led a pretty exceptional life thanks to her parents political convictions, but even though hers wasn't the everyday experience, it was very interesting nevertheless. Persepolis reminded me of The Sleeping Buddha - The Story of Afghanistan Through the Eyes of One Family, although I have to say Persepolis was much, much better. I think I need to re-read Persepolis soon, but I'll let this copy travel on in the Helsinki meet-up tomorrow.
